Hi, all:

It’s been a bit. I have been somewhat unengaged from music making these past few months . . . a combined lack of motivation and inspiration. But thankfully I have the occasional collaborator that helps keep my hand in the game, so to speak.

Christian sent me this mix a couple of weeks back and asked me to pen the lyrics. I’m not sure where they come from . . . they are a bit dark . . . and weird. But the “She’s a killer” line came to me as I mumbled some words along with the music (my usual writing process), and I followed where it led.

I don’t have the mix elements handy . . . I’ll have to ask Christian to post the BIAB backing tracks separately, so stay tuned on that. But here’s the song and the lyrics:

The song:

KILLERS

The lyrics:

Polly plays piano down at Miller’s Lake
An old folks home, they tap their feet to stay awake
She serves them homemade brownies every time she breaks
And someone aways wants for two
All the aides adore Miss Polly, ain’t she sweet
She plays her lullabies and sings old souls to sleep
She’s a killer

Jackie works from nine to five down at the docks
Listens to Mozart when he doesn’t wanna rock
Plays with kids on Sundays all around the block
Hey, don’t you know they think he’s cool
He’s got a laugh that makes you wonder how you cry
The neighbors think he’s such an ordinary guy
But he’s a killer

Billy’s just another bully’s little [*****]
He’s scores the grades but bullies don’t think much of it
They keep on ragging him they’re gonna find real quick
Don’t take much to learn you’re schooled
He’s got a smile that makes them think he’ll acquiesce
But push that mile, they’ll understand what they don’t yet
He’s a killer

Yeah, that's a killer of a song for sure. Super song construction and backing track. The lyrics are dark and ominous and very, VERY cool. Those vocals really rip into the song in all the nicest ways possible. Great collaboration, guys!

Excellent narrative Deej it hides behind the nonthreatening arrangement though there's a hint of danger in the grit of the guitar.
Excellent vocal too.

Very well done. It reminds me of Maxwell's Silver Hammer in several ways.

I really like what you two create on your own, but you two slay it as a collab twosome. Killer song. Man, this could be the full-length version of a cool theme song for a terrific series. What a fun driving force in the music and excellent lyrics so perfectly matched.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Quirky and dark, just the way I like it. The instrumentation is cool and quirky. Nice match. Fabulous vocal.

SUPERB.

1) it's SO good to hear your voice on here, once more, Deej. From the very first notes, I thought: "oh yes. Deej is back". THAT voice.

2) the song:

Absolutely superb. I could, I suppose, take it apart ... I could do it, but there's no point in reducing to words this achievement. One of your best, Deej and Christian. Tight arrangement, superb song structure. Great, great, great lyrics (you're such a good singer, Deej, they all talk about your voice and musical writing skills ... but your lyrics are top notch, too, you know smile ) ... Christian has done an incredible job with the mix ... and the rest of the proof is in the pudding, as they say. I'll be listening to this one a number of times, once more. Hats off ... if you want to make a comeback, kids, this is how you do it.

Wow, Deej, that is Dark with a capital D. If Paul Simon's Slip Slidin' Away had an Evil Twin, this is it. (You might have to think hard about that one, but it makes sense). Funny, now Soundcloud is playing your song Same as You Inside, and the contrast is a real jolt. Having said all that - good collaboration, guys. This is one of those songs if it had been on the radio in the sixties or seventies would have had people talking about it. Like Ode to Billie Joe, Timothy (anyone remember that one?), or DOA by Bloodrock. But better than any of those. Of course, despite the dark theme, any chance to hear Deej sing is worth taking. And Christian is one of my favorite composers on the forum. So, I liked the creepy ride this one took me on. More? Not sure about that, but it was a delightfully dour detour.

Hi Deej and Chris.

I love how the dark lyrics are framed by an uplifting swing arrangement.
Both of you have excelled.
This is an outstanding listen that mesermised me both musically and lyrically.
There is an awful lot of skill shown in every aspect of this presentation.
It's a standing ovation from me!

That “She’s a killer” hook has been stuck in my head since the first listen. Polly playing piano for the residents is such a sweet image, and then the twist in the chorus is awesome.

Your creatively dark lyric with chris’ lighter band match your fine punchy vocal.
The slight bit of wry humor in it is very effective.

When we first read the lyric we thought of Pretty Polly - a song we performed and recorded.
But then we realized that here Polly was the killer.

Like Marty we could imagine this as a backing track for a Twilight Zone or Alfred Hitchcock show.

That’s an excellent band and mix.
It sounds great on the monitors ... very good soundstage.
We liked the way the solo guitar differs in intensity and is more edgy.

Enjoyed it!

Not really feeling I have comments to add to songs today, but I'll give this a go since I enjoyed your vocal treatment on these "killer" lyrics. And just to say the first verse really made me laugh!

Hi, Deej and Christian.

No need to wonder where the lyrics come from - they work! smile

As others mentioned, it adds an interesting twist, and gives a dark undercurrent that leaves more to the imagination.

The vocals, backing and mix are all solid as well.

Very interesting song, highlighting all the good sides of intercontinental cooperation. Christian's chord progression, melody and instrumentation show strong musical skill. DJ's lyrics adds intriguing story-telling layer to the song, nice to hear where intuition led. And of course DJ's voice is convincing, as always. Deadly good!
