Rockin Crocks

There's a story behind this one. First, it's just a musical bed - no vocal and a quasi-lead piano.

The story:

My best friend owns the bowling alley in a nearby town. He asked me if I liked Elton John. I told him I liked him quite a bit. He told me Elton John was one of his favorites. He then asked me if I'd ever written a song in an Elton John style. I told him I had not. He challenged me to do so. he said he didn't want a sugary sweet song like Candle In The Wind or Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word. He said he wanted to hear something that would knock the lint out of his belly button as he listened. (He has way with words!) I told him I thought I could write the music to a song like he wanted, but there'd be no vocal - I can barely sing Mary Had A Little Lamb, let alone like Elton John. (But I do have a pretty decent cover of Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word). Anyway, this is what I came up with.

Whatcha Think?

Alan

Alan,

I'm convinced there is no style you cannot conquer. This sounds like Elton through & through. A great rocking groove, great instrumentation and an awesome hard-hitting mix.

Loved it!

Bob

Hi Alan!
It would be interesting to see how many of our songwriters on this forum can take this ‘bed’ and put melody and lyrics to it, and record the vocal over the top!

Alan, wow! You can really find the gold in these RTs! That piano really was grooving! Great job, enjoyed it!

Bob,

You are much too nice. But I can manage to live with it - don't stop! I like almost all genres of music. Thus, I explore and experiment with many different sounds as I have the time. Besides, I like Sir Elton's music a lot.

Glad you enjoyed it!

Alan

Oh, yeah, I can see big round sunglasses and Liberace flamboyance when I listen. How does the alley owner like it? Definitely something Elton would do. It's like what he would send to Tuapin and wait for the lyrics. Well done, Alan!! Always a treat.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Yep, could definitely be an early Elton song.
Structure it a bit more (add a bridge and make a more distinctive chorus), find a singer on Fiverr and get famous smile

Ya gotta love the title! smile

Great backstory that came to coooool fruition with this production!

Yeah, it's so easy to see him, costume, and all tickling the ivories.
It's amazing how well that rhythm piano captured the vibe in lieu of a solo-accompaniment track

Excellent,

J&B

Hectic and fun, but I think it would be a lot better if there was an alternative instrument playing a solo in the middle third; ie: not just a few seconds of something else.

Mission accomplished, Alan! Six hours, well, you did say he is your best friend. Great work, I could hear a bit of Croc Rock in the progression, if my ears don't deceive me.

Thanks, Mario. Sorry for the late reply, Di is struggling and that comes first.

Glad you liked it! Uh ... you got Mr. Taupin's number? He could write a great lyric about how to prepare pickled pigs feet and make it sound great. (I'll pass the pigs feet, though!).

Take care,

Alan

Thanks so much, folks! And yeah, appearance aside, he does tickle those keys quite nicely. I was looking at my bank account yesterday. It looks pretty good, but I think Sir Elton has a few more numbers than i do before the decimal point. And yeah, that RT carries the load quite nicely.

Best to yas,

Alan
