This is beautiful Ron. The vocal is outstanding. Your vocals just keep getting better and better.

Lyric is superb as always, and I love the simplicity of the arrangement. Might be great for sync. Has the movie feel.

THANKS, Marty! Yeah, the intermittent triplet feel over the four beat bars aligns with the misaligned feelings of the poor narrator. Sounds cool, too. Glad you enjoyed the tune!

Hi, Ron.

Good song, but the vocal guitar is what makes it for me.

Nice work! smile

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thanks, Beth! Wasn't being younger and angsty just TOO UNBEARABLY COOL?! I did have to dig back a ways to remember it myself. Ha! Glad you enjoyed the tune!

This is a true pop diamond, one of the most intimate songs I have heard for a long time. It's difficult to even find words to describe how good this song is.

The lyrics are heart-wrenching - "you're pulling my strings/like I'm your puppet/I'm not a puppet". And the chorus is really really strong, one you can really be proud of.

Great idea to use such a small band, it gives room for your excellent vocal performance and the raw emotion in your voice, even sibilants belong there. The guitars sound fantastic. I love the minor chord at the end of the chorus, true highlight (or lowlight in a positive sense).

And excellent use of kleenex laugh

A sad song that's not soapy - terrific!

It all works - perfectly. Great song - great listen.

Thank you, Alan! Harder (for me) to do a barebones arrangement, but...it had to be done. Glad I didn't mess it up and you enjoyed the listen!!

Ron,

This is a great listen.
The lyrics, the music, your singing and production all fit together like a hand in a glove.
Everything worked really well for me.
Another fine effort!

Chay, glad you enjoyed the tune! The lyricist does like to play with ambiguity, and has been known to hide an Easter Egg in a lyric. Sometimes I'm aware of the story behind the lyric, but usually not. If I ask what the lyric about he'll sometimes tell, but often he'll just ask what it means to me. If I tell him he'll usually just respond, "that's cool". So...to my knowledge there is not a doctor/nurse scenario. But if that's what it means to you, I think that's cool. Glad you got that off of your chest.

Thank you, Rob! Sometimes I'll stare at a lyric and think there couldn't possibly be a cool sounding song in there, but I'm usually wrong. It is a fun process to work through though. Glad you liked the tune!

Laurent

Thanks, Laurent. Was torn on how to arrange this one (might still be) but chose the bare bones arrangement for the reasons you listed. The intro is just the strummed acoustic guitar panned slightly left. A send on the acoustic goes to a plate reverb panned hard right and just loud enough to give a gentle stereo image. Glad you liked it!

Thank you, David. Have to thank you (again) for the "sing it softer" tip from the previous song. Tried it again on this one and liked the way it worked with the lyric. Hey, who sez you can't teach an old dog a new trick?? Of course at this point, I could be forgetting an old trick and just THINK it's new. Fun either way!

“R.W. Davis: Lyrics
Me: Music, arrangement, vocals, guitars, mix, master, kleenex
AI: Still no”
Love the Kleenex mention and the AI status. smile

Your vocal is great and the phrasing accentuates the sadness in in lyric well.
And a well written lyric it is.

It sounds like you’re in the same room with us.

The open mix with the great sparse band makes it even more intimate.
The soundstage it sets up on our monitor is excellent.

For us it’s reminiscent of some Neal Young but also of Jeff Tweedy.

Great production!

Thanks, David! Not 100% sure I know what a "vocal guitar" is but I think it MUST be a compliment. Glad you enjoyed the song!

Thank you, Janne! Yeah, such a cool lyric (not mine). What I love most about the lyric are all the things implied but not revealed, so the listener's imagination (and experience, perhaps) is essential to complete the story. Thanks for the in depth review, so glad you liked the song!
