Having had a couple of my songs covered in the 70s and also having quite a few rejected which can be painful to the pride for us songwriters who write to look for a deal. Remember there are many Simon Cowells out there who will listen to your songs (thats if you can get it to the top of their cd pile)and will really say what they think whether good or bad. There are other songwriters who write just for the pleasure of creating music and arent really that much interested in trying to get a publishing deal.I believe there are songwriters like these on every music forum that Ive been on (and believe me Ive been on a few over the years) including this one.For those writers who believe in their songs and have had them rejected time and time again dont give up because one day someone will see in that song something others have missed. But and this is crucial YOU have to be your worst critic and if you hear weak points in your song dont just leave it in but work to find something that fits much better.Hope this helps it still helps me because this info was given to me by a top publishing exec at Warner Bros .

Frankie...excellent points and some useful info. I've had a few things covered too, although not by anyone "famous". However, my own producer, on my first original album, was a hit songwriter ( "I Dig Rock n' Roll Music" ) and had also produced numerous gold and platinum albums for some big name groups like Poco and Firefall. His advice to me was to "write from the heart" and don't worry so much about how mass-market your work is. And consider the source when evaluating critiques of your work. Everyone's a "specialist" in this business and they are more than willing to give you their unbidden input. His other advice and perhaps the most important is that no matter what level of expertise you've attained, whether as a singer, musician, engineer, producer, songwriter YOU CAN ALWAYS IMPROVE in some area. INVEST IN YOURSELF, whether it's voice or instrument lessons, songwriting books, peer support groups, songwriter's circles, whatever....never stop improving. Always strive to make your next project a little better than the last. And finally, as one famous songwriter advised..."write for the trashcan." In other words, write like it doesn't matter, and write because you love it. I'd rather be remembered for something I wrote that touched someone's heart and added something meaningful to their life, than for any wealth I might have accumulated from my songs. ~Bob

Hi Bob,Also excellent points not sure about writing for the trashcan that famous songwriter probably said that "after"he had made it.Robert Palmer wrote great songs on his way to becoming famous and then after he had achieved it then delivered an album to his record company which was completely different to the style that made him famous the record company I believe refused to release it.Apparently he did and had mixed reviews with no hits either side of the Atlantic. He didnt care because he made it when you make it then you do have the power to write for that trash can.Cheers Frankie

So true about some successful performers. (LOVE Robert Palmer, BTW!) A lot of entertainment types reach a certain level of success and then feel the need to step out of the box whether it's music or politics. Success in one area doesn't guarantee success in another, or make one an authority on every subject. But it certainly seems to be a common occurrence among the successful, unfortunately. I can't find the quote but I think the "famous sonwriter" I'm quoting is Jimmy Webb ("Tunesmith"...the book) and "By The Time I Get to Phoenix", etc. And I'm not sure at what point in his career that statement was made. But there are a number of interpretations of the quote. Basically I think it means to not be afraid to fail or appear foolish when you sit down to write. Don't try to make ever word and every line the beginning of some mega hit. Just get out of your own head and let the ideas flow freely...i.e..."spitballing". And whatever you do, don't actually throw away anything! I have briefcases full of songs and snippets written over the last 35 years, and l love going back and reading what I wrote. Some of it I can't believe came from me. And I try to remember my inspiration for the words. More importantly, years later I've found new inspiration in some old lines and proceeded to turn them into a new song. Anyway..."writing for the trashcan" is, of course, not a literal statement, but rather an encouragement to free ones mind of any mental road blocks or hindrances before setting about to create. What an incredible creative process to be a part of, isn't it?

Hi Bob,Robert Palmer yeah he was so good.A very good friend of mine John David had a song "Love Stop" on one of his albums .Palmer also said that he went back to some of his old songs and did a rewrite and they became hits.Cheers Frankie
