The girl who never was... on YouTube
The girl who never was...soundcloud
Another in the "pedal steel that's not country" series.

Key=G, Tempo 95, Length (m:s)=3:01
Style is _FELIX.STY (Felix Celtic Songwriter Quartet)
RealTracks in style: 3226:Guitar, 12-String Acoustic, Rhythm CelticSongwriterQuinn Ev16 080
RealTracks in style: 3186:Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm CelticSongwriterQuinn Ev16 080
RealTracks in song: 3545:Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking CelticBalladSoft Ev 075
RealDrums in style:AmericanaRoots16th^02-a:Sidestick , b:Snare

Marty Straub did some of the writing, mixing and played bass. I did vocals, pedal steel and video production.
Here are the lyrics. I hope you like it.

Ten little fingers I never got to hold.
Whispered "I love you"s.
Forehead kisses when I'm old.
And that's because she's the girl that never was.

I could have called her Helen,
or maybe Anne Marie,
I always liked Victoria or Billy just like me.
That's because..... she's the girl that never was.

CH: I smell the coffee and I'm looking for my keys
It's just another boring day
This is reality, I got to earn my pay
She's just the one who got away

(pedal steel solo)

She’d have me for the holiday a present and a tree
She’d grow up strong and healthy her own baby on her knee.
that’s because..... She’s the girl that never was

She could have called her Helen or maybe Ann Marie
She could have called her Bobbie or Billy just like me
and that’s because She’s the girl who never was

CH: I smell the coffee and I'm looking for my keys
It's just another boring day
This is reality I got to earn my pay
She's just the one who got away

She’s the girl who never
(girl who never)
She's the girl who never
(girl who never)
Girl,,, who never was

Very cool, hook-filled tune. Like the sparse arrangement a lot, it works perfectly. Marty's bass is always a pleasure. Your vocals are quite nice. Don't know exactly what I'm hearing, but the vocals have a digital artifact fuzziness around them, at least to my ears. A little less of that might be a better listen. But it wouldn't make the song better. It's a killer song!

LOL...I clicked on the link thinking the name of the song was "The Girl Who Never Was on Youtube". HAHAHAHA ... Then I had to go through my whole cookie-cleaning ritual. But since the song was loaded, I listened. Great song. Really beautiful guitar and melody. Very catchy. Loved the vocals too.

Hi Bill!
I really love that acoustic rhythm swaying between those two chords - back and forth - and it works so well with the meter of the lyrics - like a hand in a glove. The lyric “because … she’s the girl that never was” doesn’t get tired and works great every time one hears it.

Also some cool chords in the chorus.

If it was on Soundcloud, I’d add it to my playlist ‘Andrew’s BIAB songwriter favs’.

Very nice.

I was trying to figure out the meaning..... it kinda sounds like it's talking about losing a child in some manner and pondering the "what could have been".

This is nicely done and a good lyric write as well.

Vocals, lyrics, production - they all work.

The pedal steel was especially nice.

Yes, I like it, but you already know that. It's one of those songs that stays in your head long after you hear it, and can pop back in there anytime after. It's amazing how you can get som much out of essentially one chord in parts. It was particularly challenging to come up with a bassline that didn't just pedal, and I was happy to have the chorus come in once in awhile. smile Love that pedal steel.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Yeah thanks, I changed that. Anyway, there are no girls who have never been on youtube.

Thanks Andrew, I've been trying to do songs that use pedal steel but aren't country. Glad you liked it and found it on Soundcloud. I dont use that site enough.

I try to make my lyrics as open ended as I can. Hopefully, more people can identify with them that way. Yes, it is about loss, but loss can come in many forms. The chorus slaps you back to reality. Glad you liked it

Thanks Floyd. Marty and I have been playing together for 35 years or so. Me and the steel go back even further. Glad you liked it

Very enjoyable collaboration on the lyric and performances.

Good vocals and band - it has a Monkees feel of some of their best.

Nice work on the steel and Marty’s foundation.

Cool video

Enjoyed it!
