Before I paste my "Satiricom" blurb here, is anyone else having problems accessing SoundCloud via forum links? Today is the 2nd time SC won't let me listen to anything without logging in: when I click the Play button a window comes up requiring a log-in. After the first few day that happened a few weeks ago it began letting me in again, but today it won't. I assume it's something to do with the new SC layout. Apologies to those posting on SC as I can't now listen to your posts, so I'll keep on trying until I can.

And now "Satiricom":

I coined the term 'satiricom' in 2021 as a contraction of 'satirical comment', which I like as it's virtually the same sound as 'Satyricon' as in both The Romans' "The Book of Satyrlike Adventures" and Fellini's 1969 movie. From 21-22 I created text and images for 6 satiricoms, which were posted on various social media sites, so in 2024 I decided to create a video of them and composed this music for the video, though this is an improved remix of the original;.

Bass: Oleo Bop w/ Acoustic Bass ~ Neil Swainson
Drums: Oleo Bop w/ Acoustic Bass ~ Craig Scott
Strings 1: Crooner Solo n Strings Orchestra ~ Steve Kummer
Guitar: Crooner Solo n Strings Orchestra ~ Oliver Gannon
Piano 1: East Dock Piano (2 sample hybrid) ~ Jeff Lorber
Piano 2: Aisling Celtic Air Cello Ballad ~ Blair Masters
Sirius Warm Pad & Strings ~ uncredited
Strings 2: Jazz Orchestra String Quartet ~ Avery Bright
Horns: Big Band Shout 11-part Horns / Crooner Big Band 9-part hybrid ~ Jim Clark
Vocals (solo): Rum Runner Old Time Vocal Jazz ~ Britt Savage
Organ: Giddy Up Country Ballad w Organ ~ Blair Masters
Background Vocals: Speakeasy Old Time Vocal Jazz ~ Britt Savage
Bell Pad: 80s Pop Ballad w/ Bell Pad ~ Miles Black
Guitar Solo: Bricks Indie Rock w/ Guitar Solo ~ Mike Durham

From my Timeline notes:
Horns are a hybrid of Big Band Shout 11 part Horns & Crooner Big Band 9 part Horns samples, but as the centre part is way louder than what precedes and follows it, I had to cut the hybrid sample into 4, then decrease and increase the db of each section as needed. I also did a 1 second adjustable fade 1:35-1:36 to kill a single way too deep note.

84 bars; 4/4, G; tempo 110; Time 3:12

Chay, hey, this is different! Like the blend of retro musical foundation with more modern sounds. Consistently interesting arrangement and nice mix. Great job!

Chay,

That's a great sound. I also love the way you use the Britt Savage vocals. Very effective. Awesome mix as well.

Hi Chay! I got distracted (in a good way) by the messages on each image - some real social commentary there! The music was a good contrast to the messages, and it worked to illustrate the sometimes hypocrisy we see and hear. The music itself was very pleasant and a diversity of voices and instrumentation to keep the listener engaged. I loved the use of vocals in that section.
Well done!

Peppy jump jazz big band lite with gospel vocals . interesting.
The keyboard melody seemed at odds with the rest of the vibe though.
Interesting.

Cheers

Thanks, Bob! I know a singer who can do raw vocals like Bitt Savage, possibly even better, but she charges for them! smile

Interesting.

Thanks for the response, Ray. After reading your comment I re-listened to the track and the keyboard seems to fit right to me.

That is a both fasinating and engaging take on a big band vibe.
We liked that upright intro and all that followed.

Amazing the work involved in the getting the horns to your satisfaction.
14 tracks and each has its own comfortable spot in the mix.
Great session players in that mix also.

Creative to the max!

Thanks for that review, J&B. The notes above are only a part of my full notes. The East Dock piano is also a hybrid of 2 samples and although I love the sound of that piano there are always some single way too loud notes in the samples which I have to silence.
