SLIDE RULE
======
I'm thinking of starting a part-time gig as act for young people..do you think I could make it with this?
-----------------------------
First day of class, your brain's on fire;
That higher Mathematics only gonna get higher!
Why you lettin' them fry you, fool?
"Ain't you ever heard of the Slide Rule?

I'm not talkin' 'bout the doodad hanging from your belt;
Gotta save yourself from the hand you're dealt;
That calculus junk is a giant funk;
Drop it for Shop before you up and flunk.

The Slide Rule, the Slide Rule..

Now you can use Slide Rule anywhere in life--
At school, at work, or if you got a wife;
The idea is you don't need no stress;
Turn your back on the tough and choose easiness.

Logarithms, tangents, geometry,
Fibonacci numbers, trigonometry;
When you slide that strip, move that glass,
When they ask for Pi--oh, son, they got your...

Why take the high load, not worth the strife!
Look for the fly road, the carefree life.
Don't let them turn you to a pie-eyed tool,
Just kinda slip away--the Slide Rule!

Don't listen to the brainiacs, they only lie.
Forget about arithmetic and just slide by;
Twenty years from now in your junk key drawer
You're gonna find that slide rule--a dinosaur!
=============
I made this from a drum sample I took, then added various MIDI elements as well as a couple of sound effects. I wish I had a vox effect for electronic-like touch, but I don't.

I should add that even though I didn't use any BIAB styles or RTs, I did use a RD track and several loops, and the whole thing was created in RealBand.

Hi Tom! Or should I call you DJ Tano or the Tomsta?

I’ve only been on the forum for 4 months and expect a particular genre from you, but this is way left of centre! I loved it!

The rhythm section and bass groove was wonderful, and magic when your backing vocals came in with the harmonised title - also the octave vocals were a nice touch as well.

What a surprise!

It's an interesting piece, but I doubt school kids would go for it, particularly as they probably already use online slide rules.

Tom, well, I don't know about kids today. They're just...different. But I do know what *I* like, and this is it. Very creative in a gonzo Zappa-ish way. Everything sounds surprising but cool, and makes for an enjoyable listen. So...10/10 from me!

Hi DJ Tomsta. Too funny. That school band tuba made me laugh aloud as did your lyrics.

Ron mentioned Zappa and that came to mind immediately.

Firstly the write is creative to the max. Too many cool lines to single one out.
Hmmmmm ...what the heck we'll throw one out:
"Don't let them turn you to a pie-eyed tool,"

And the spoken word and BGV's are great.

The arrangement is mesmerizing ... in the good sense of the term.
From a drum sample to this. Wow. Might need to listen to some. smile
Enjoyed it!

All..thanks for indulging me...this all started when I was talking with someone about the changes in life and the "slide rule" was brought up. I've always thought that it is one of the most interesting and weird items that has passed through my life, and it occurred to me that you could make a kind of double-meaning joke about it as a "rule". Anyway, I had to post this b/c it was a pesky earworm that I had to move off of.

Tom, this is outrageously funny
Using the double meaning of slide rule - Brilliant
Super groove and great vocal
Great backing tracks
Loved it

PS - unfortunately I remember slide rules but gave them up and bought a $50 USD 4 function calculator!

Hey Mario...thanks for listening to my one-and-only rap song! It's nice to be among "mature" people who actually remember artifacts like the slide rule!

Sliiiiide. Tom, this is really quite a fun piece of music. Yeah, the lyrics are the superstar of the show, but I love every piece that supports them. Fun voices throughout, and just the perfect background. I like how many pieces sliiiide in and out. Love it!

Enjoy whatever happens!

Bonus points for creativity. You pulled off that vocal far better than I would've ever dreamed. Nice work.

Ha! Even though you're showing a picture of it, they have no idea what that is or what it is used for. I had the chance to use it back in the days ( I didn't like it though) But anyway, fun tune.
