Hi All,

Here's something new from us called BROOKLYN LOVE SONG.

Darcy lit a Newport with a gas station match
Leanin' on Joey’s Civic, the paint all scratched
With a trunk full of tools and 8-track dreams
She said, “They say Bushwick’s changing, but it’s still the same to me”

Joey had a scar from the Navy days
Said he used to fix turbines out in San Diego Bay
Now he’s doin’ drywall for a friend in the Heights
Said, “Baby, we’ll be alright, just gotta make it through another night”

In the empty lot behind Ed’s Food Store
With a streetlight buzzin’ like a holy war
They shared a cola and a cigarette
Talkin’ 'bout the days they haven’t lived yet
Skyline rising in the rearview light
Lookin’ for a way out on a one-way night

She had a spiral notebook full of names
Some ol’ boyfriends and schemes that never came
But Joey only read the poems she wrote in bed
About motels by the ocean and the words she never said

At her cousin’s place off Dekalb Avenue
Took turns in the shower, shared the one good bath towel
She worked part-time at the thrift on Flushing
Stole snacks for Joey when the hunger came rushing

In the empty lot behind Ed’s Food Store
With a streetlight buzzin’ like a holy war
They shared a cola and a cigarette
Talkin’ 'bout the days they haven’t lived yet
Skyline rising in the rearview light
Lookin’ for a way out on a one-way night

Some nights they’d dance to the car stereo
Some nights they’d fight about nothin' at all
She’d cry in the front seat, he’d punch the dashboard
But they never stopped showing up when the other one called

That winter hit hard and the heat got cut
But they wrapped up in blankets and called it enough
She said, “This ain’t pretty, but it’s better than gone”
He said, “Darcy, you and me, we’ve been holdin’ on this long”

In the empty lot behind Ed’s Food Store
With a streetlight buzzin’ like a holy war
They shared a cola and a cigarette
Talkin’ 'bout the days they haven’t lived yet
Skyline rising in the rearview light
Lookin’ for a way out on a one-way night

Wow, Bob, another monochrome classic from the two of you. Love this from the D-18 in the opening bars to the shaker in the fadeout. Longish song by the run time, but it flies by. You and Joliz crush the vocals (again). Very intimate and moving and...just GREAT!

Hi Bob and Joliz!

A great song about poverty, struggle, love and dreams. Your ability to paint a story with words is a gift. I wonder where you get the inspiration from? I’m assuming the lyrics come first with you.

Joliz’s hum in various sections is cello-like - I love that.

Good work!

Bob, your work always involves a depth of story-telling details—inspirational and motivational for me, something I’d like to do much better. I esp liked the counter-balance between the semi-spoken verse and the more fully sung chorus, as well as the use of super simple backing to emphasize certain key sections. One thing more: the way you did the BGV’s I think was diffferent and quite cool. Great work!!

Man, I love how you create these stories, Bob. It's not easy developing the characters in a short song, but you manage to make them real with just a few words. Always so relatable. Joliz is the perfect addition, and I like the whole band.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Another piece showcasing your unique storytelling talents and voices that were made for telling 'em. Love that chug style. "Streetlight buzzin' like a holy war"...what a line!

Another great 'urban legend' song. Really amazing chorus and Joliz always adds that extra special.

Another gritty, feel the heat, the cold, the rawness of the streets.

"Talkin’ 'bout the days they haven’t lived yet" What a great way to say they were talking about the future.

I like it.

Andrew,

That's very kind and we both appreciate it.

Lyrics almost always come first to me. It may be a phrase or something I jotted down years ago and just revisited, or it could be completely new. I never know where an idea will come from. smile

As long as they keep emerging - I guess I'm ok. LOL!

Bob...before listening to the song I just read the lyric...without a doubt you are a gifted and creative lyricist apart from adding a melody to the imagery of this piece...a master storyteller...your tracks are always so clean and leave space for the vocal melody...I always enjoy your stylistic choices and arrangements...well done my friend.

Bob, you are one hell of a story teller
Outstanding song
Loved those lyrics and your vocal
Joliz was icing on the cake
IMHO you are up there with John Prine when it comes to story telling via music
Great mix
Loved it

Bob & Joliz,

This is an awesome song! Your delivery is mesmerizing. Your words create indelible images that make the listeners think they are right there watching the story unfold. My mind could see the lit cigarette toasting the night air as the static buzz of the streetlight droned overhead, You can take the simplest words and meld them into a masterpiece portrait simply by the way you meld them and then inflex them via your vocals.

Simply put, this is a work of superior art.

Wishing the very best for both of you.

Alan

Hi, Bob.

Another song with specific details of time, place, and most importantly, feeling that transports me into the narrative.

The semi-spoken bits work especially well.

Storytelling at its best. smile

Once again you’ve painted such vivid scenery with your lyric.
And Joliz adds the textures in all the right places on the canvas!

There are so many great lines here and especially in the chorus. Wow.
At the risk of being repetitively redundant smile again your lyrics are absolutely top tier.
So many folks would love to write one song as good as a random pull from your catalog.

Excellent band and we always love to hear your D-18.
One look at the waveform told us we’d love the mix!

Enjoyed it!

I took one look at the lengthy lyrics sheet and thought that it was going to present some problems. But of course, you handled it with your usual musical aplomb, and the result was a typical satisfying Bob Dean tune. Well done!
