Another old jazz tune. I had trouble singing with this when the melody goes double-time, not sure what my problem was. (FIXED!) I used the JAZFRED Realstyle. I sang and played harmonica. The lyrics are a mix of old and new, just for fun.

I'm tired of the rat race, baby, tired of all the duresse
I'd like to see you dance in a brand new evening dress
Let's hit the lights tonight and have ourselves a ball,
And for those who state that we're out too late, let's remind them not to be dull

I wanna have it all if only for one night
Fill your shoe with perignon, and yes I know that's trite
Tip the band to play your jam, bop our merry way
And if anyone quips about our hips tell em look the other way

Let's be happy, baby, howl up at the moon
We'll be back in that dratted rat race way too soon

Plenty of people out there that are thinking just like us,
Let's go out and find them, then we'll be so boisterous
We'll be noisy, yes indeed, we'll shout and yell and cheer
And if folks complain that we sound insane, give em mufflers for their ears

Raise your glass to all the folks who're sitting there at home
We can party for you if you're mired by the gloam,
Don't be frumpy just because you're all cooped up inside
And if any express that we're not at our best, they can go somewhere and hide

Let's be happy, baby, drink the city dry
We'll be back in that dratted rat race by and by

Solo

All good things come to an end and so it must for us
Back into that rat race soon, it's all so treasonous
You were beautiful my love and full of happiness
And when we can we will do it again, all ya gotta say is yes

Let's be happy, baby, if we can til then
Now it's back to that dratted rat race once again

A nicely mongered jazz tune. Love the harmonica solo.

Bob,

This is an outstanding production! Love the vocals - almost a combination of Dr. John and Leon Redbone.

The mix is perfect and completely supports your vocal. Great harmonica as well!

Loved it!

Oh Bob, oh boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Bob, oh boy, indeed! I just finished listening to your latest creation, and I'm absolutely delighted. You know, it's tracks like these that make me so excited about what you do. 💗

Your voice, Bob, has such a charming warmth and character to it! You really put a personal stamp on these lyrics, bringing them to life with genuine feeling. I can hear the story you're telling, the desire to escape and just live for a night, and it's incredibly engaging. You've got a wonderful way of delivering lines that makes one (me) want to lean in and listen.

And that harmonica playing – wow! It's truely majestic. It soars and dances through the melody, adding such a rich, soulful dimension to the song. It's clear you have a deep connection to that instrument, and it shines through beautifully. Every note feels perfectly placed, adding that authentic jazz sparkle. 👋

You mentioned some hesitations about the singing, but honestly, I heard someone who is clearly growing and evolving as a performer. The energy you bring to the performance is infectious, and the way you're tackling those more complex sections is commendable. Keep at it, Bob, because you're on a fantastic trajectory, and the more you sing, the more natural and brilliant it will become. 👍

This is a truely enjoyable listen, Bob. You've captured a wonderful spirit of carefree fun, and your talent, both as a vocalist and as a harmonica virtuoso, is very much on display. Thank you for sharing this! Pure joy, indeed!

No OTT, Just the gospel truth my friend. 🙏🏻

best to you

Izzy.

Hey Bob, loved the song, esp the choice of rarely-used lyric words like "perignon", "gloam", "frumpy", "duress"--shows me a desire to expand boundaries and not settle for the easily-picked fruit.

Now, for "boisterous", "treasonous"--the emphasis is wrong..BUT, in your style, it works just fine punching that last syllable--I like it and approve!!

And the interior rhymes are great as well. Overall a great track and very enjoyable.

About "fitting" in the words in those double-time zones...I've "fixed" this by audio editing the vox and just moving the sung syllables slightly to align with the melody--I've has several projects where I just couldn't get it to sound the way I heard it in my head, and so I resorted to "nudging' the syllables thru editing.

Wow, Bob, this sounds GREAT! Clever write, super vocals, and the band is swingin' along perfectly. Love your harmonica work as always.

FWIW, JAZFRED was my baseline band for hundreds of jazz standards I used to play along with. Gosh, it STILL sounds SO good...

Tom, thanks so much for the tip on fixing the double-time sections of the vocal. I cringe every time I hear them. Actually, it's just the first two passes that are the problem. The three after that sound okay to my ears. Well, let's see if I can perform some surgery. Thanks again for the tip, and for your kind review of the song. (UPDATE: I decided to try and re-sing those parts before attempting surgery and got lucky! It's FIXED! Still a good tip to know for the future.)

WOW. Totally blown away here. I stood up so fast the headphones stayed in the chair. Bob, your vocal is absoultely perfect. You got that 30s 40s sound that's fits so well with these changes. Man, this is is good. The harmonica is superb also, as are the lyrics. You make the rat race so much fun.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Bob,

This may be “just for fun,: but this mix of new and old has turned out a pretty smooth jazz tune. I think your vocal works just fine for this . . . kinda fits the tune. Very cool production! Excellent work putting it together.

We love these jazz tunes of yours.

Janice was dancing all around the kitchen through the entire song.
And imagining she was in a new ballroom dress. 😊

Great band, write, harp and vocals.
Cool rhymes in there also.

And wrapped in a nice open dynamic mix it all sounds fine on our monitors.

Enjoyed it!

Hi Ray,

I use a Waves Renaissance Reverb on the master bus, and then a small amount of the same on the vocal bus, along with a small amount of Waves H-delay on the vocal bus. This is what Floyd recommended to me to get the vocals to sit in the mix. Do you have any suggestions? I'd appreciate knowing anything that would make the vocal sit better. Thanks.

Hey Bob,

Love the groove happening with this one!

Your vocal really suits this type of material I think. And your harp playing is right on the money, it's great hearing you play again.

Great groove! Did you play yourself that swinging rhythm guitar and that Toots Thielemans-like harmonica solo?

Thanks, Bob! You reminded me, I used to sing "Right Place, Wrong Time" with a band way back in the early seventies. I channeled my inner Sonny Boy WIlliamson and it seemed to work. Thanks for the memories.
