Well H E double L.....

Our Internet went out last night. Still out this morning. 7-4-25....

Did all the obvious stuff.... Power cycle, reset the router with the recessed button. Nothing.
So I called tech support. They had me do all that again. Still nothing. The technician said they'd need to send a field technician. Ok .. that's good. Figured it would be maybe later today or tomorrow but Monday at the latest. Oh no.... It'll be July 23. Say what?
So I had to agree to that. They said it might be sooner if the technician has an opening.
As soon as I hang up I go outside to the point of demarcation..... That little grey plastic box on the side of the house. Using my knowledge of phone systems and my tools, it becomes readily apparent that there is zero voltage on the 2 lines that comprise my DSL.
Hmmmmmm. So I get on my golf cart with my tools and head to the street to see if anything is damaged and possibly check the voltage there.
It's possible, after all, that the tree trimming company for the power company had damaged my underground cable.
My neighbor upfront was in his yard so I asked him about his internet. He said it was out and the technician who had been there last week.... we've been having Internet drops and he had called,..... Said the company was converting our highway to fiber in the next week or two and there could be outages as the process is completed. So there's hope that the Internet could be on and off as they work on the changeover. Or, we could simply be without any Internet for the foreseeable future.

The problem is.... I can't upload anything from my studio without the Internet working. And yeah ... I'm about to finish another tune not counting a few other things I need Internet to accomplish. It all involves the uploads.

I can use my phone to access the Internet but working online is a non-starter until this gets resolved.

We recently went from 20mbs on copper to 1gig on fiber. I can upload a 60meg wav before I get my hands of the keys. smile

FWIW when before fiber and in your situation I would often pair my iPhone with my Mac and upload a file via my relatively slow ATT coverage. Slooow but got the job done.

Yep, any port in a storm.

We recently went from 20mbs on copper to 1gig on fiber.

I'm envious. We've been on 100Mbps (real world 85Mbps) over copper where I live in the heart of the Silicon Valley. This week, AT&T is bringing fiber to my neighborhood but only promising 300Mbps for around double what I'm already paying. Oh goodie... We were promised this 22 years ago when I worked for ATT.

My approach to slow data was usually to set up a script to upload/download overnight. It then works without me.
That's usually pretty easy on my usual OS; I've never tried on Windows or Mac, but I imagine one can do something similar.

Our copper was 20 down and 2 or less up. Often when uploading the hoped for recipient site would time out. Most remarkable about our experience is that the cost is about 2/3 what we were paying for copper. One reason we waited so long is that we live on a 1 mile dead end road with all underground utilities and apparently the 9 homes in our development was not considered worth the underground effort. I had to reach nearly 80 years of age before we received it this spring but I can still hugely appreciate it. 😀

Herb, keep us in the loop on how long it takes to be resolved. July 23rd is unsatisfactory for a paid service.

I just had 2 commercial projects for sync that I needed to upload to my publisher. I tried different things over 2 days and after a long wait for the upload to finish it was kicking back an "error: upload failure" message. After trying a few things he suggested he agreed to take a box dot com folder. All the files and edits were almost a gig each.
I'd be willing to pay a little bit more for faster service. Even my downloads for software updates takes a very long time. It reminds me of the old days trying to download a 20mb program on dialup.

I did a chat with the Bright Speed folks and they said that the July 23 date was the latest they'd have a technician at my house. Hopefully much sooner

You might try getting a free month trial of Starlink. Well actually I don't know if it's totally free but a friend here is getting a month trial for either free or big discount. Just a thought. smile

The Service might be free bit I understand that you still have to purchase the hardware.

Been with a number of UK companies in Ireland over the years, started off with AOL on dial-up, fond memories of getting my first PC in 2000 and the exciting bit of listening to the modem as it dialled in to the net, I think cost was £14.99 a month. Then AOL offered broadband half a Megabit for £19.99 instead of the usual £27.99 a month. No more AOL (their installation discs were everywhere to be found)

Times have moved on, there are a number of smaller companies here now who lay fibre in specific area's and I have signed up to one of those called YouFibre, for £31.99 a month I get 900, both down and upload speed the same.

Hope you get it sorted soon Herb, I know how it feels when internet goes down, really annoying.

I'm approaching one week. No Internet yet. No word from the company. I've already blown through my cell phone high speed data.

I feel like I'm in the stone age. Or at least the 80's.

It took me 10+ minutes to place a simple Amazon order for my wife yesterday. Egads....

Herb, how local is your "local" public library? I believe every NC public library offers free 24 / 7 parking lot wi-fi, hot spots you can check out like a book and internet connected computers.

It might be time to get some return on your county tax dollars investment and put them tax dollars to work for you

There's a corridor in the Silicon Valley that is still on 720k dial-up. Do DSL, no CATV, nothing. You can walk to Apple's mothership in Cupertino and HPs Santa Clara campus from there. Until a DirecTV satellite was finally in range a few years ago, that was as good as it could get. Available speeds are now 8-24 Mbps — Yikes! As much as I complain about my service, I'm glad not to be living five miles away.

I know when my internet goes out, my son has an iPhone and uses the “hot spot” feature on it to connect all of his devices in his room. He can even play online games without any glitches.

I have no idea how he uses it to connect everything electronic in his room, but he carries on like nothing happens when the home WiFi goes out 🤷‍♂️

Same here, and I do a lot of data intensive stuff .. not as much fun as gaming, but the hot spot method works as long as the computer has a wifi option..

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

UPDATE:

After checking the local Cellular data providers, the ONLY option was to upgrade my cellphone plan to the highest level and I have a Hotspot that is useable for wi-fi connection. So.... until I get the hardwired internet back restored or upgraded, I have a relatively fast connection.

30mbps down
1.7mbps up

faster than my DSL

I was so happy to read you’re back online and and now have a back-up plan for the future that I mosied on over to listen to some of your music. I enjoy Country & Bluegrass when you can hear all of the instruments in the mix.

Your songs sound professional to my ears and mixing several stringed instruments is no easy task.

Great vocals as well. The young lady’s voice reminds me of a young Miranda Lambert and she sings great!
