Now she’s pouring drinks down on Avenue D
She says she’s going to Paris and Spain someday
But her passport’s expired and her hair’s gone gray

Then she laughs at herself and plays some rock and roll

There’s Frankie with a limp by the laundromat light
Lost a toe and his luck in a Bushwick fight
Tells me stories about a dancer he once knew
With a husky voice and a switch-up crew
Now he fixes bikes and belts out Springsteen tunes

But the bodega cat doesn’t hold a grudge
The cops crack wise on a midnight beat

Like the city’s exhaling all of its grief and weight
A kid tags a mural with a trembling hand
