CRISS CROSS A sort of sea-shanty about a repetitive journey ---------------------------- I'm starting a journey today, Departing from home on my way; I'm riding the winds that prevail, Criss-crossing the sea as I sail; From harbor to harbor I ride; A map of the stars for my guide; Bouncing around's such a natural plan; And now I’m back home, Where my journey began! Through a dozen old harbors I ride; I drift with a fifth at my side; These friendly old ports on my tour; I know that I’ve been here before; Always a pleasure to visit and then I touch home and I'm off, Round the circle again! ============================ Style: WLZPARIS RTs: 1109 Acoustic Bluegrass Waltz, 777 Acoustic Bass Pop Waltz, 2568 Accordion Rhythm OldWorld Waltz, 3099 Organ Rhythm Americana RD: FootStomp Waltz MIDI: Concertina/SqueezeBox, HonkyTonk Piano, Celeste, Tambourine, BellTree

Love that sparkly intro. Very interesting sound overall. I like the "Through a dozen old harbors I ride; I drift with a fifth at my side." Did you change it because you didn't like the meaning? May I suggest "I drift with a fifth to imbibe". I like that long i vowel better than the short a in plan and hand. I know, I know. Super pick-y-une!!! It's just a more pirate-y sound. Rrrr! Eyyye!

Cool sea adventure. Seems this seaman surely enjoys his journey. Very cool instrumentation to accomany him along. I can see him sailing solo with his 5th, singing this song. Concertina and Bell tree --brilliant!

Thanks all…the “journey” is going around the circle of fifths. The chord movement in the verse is traveling through the 12 “stops”, and you wind up in the same key where you started. And the step-wise phrase at the end of the bridge also goes thru the circle of 5ths. A fun writing exercise!

Well done Tom! Entertaining and educational at the same time. You did a good job keeping pitch as you moved through the dozen.
At first, the jingly intro made me think we were getting a Star Trek journey, but I assume it's all 12 tones? If it is, Arnold Schoenberg would be most impressed!

"I touch home and I'm off, Round the circle again!" Cool journey around the sea and the circle. The circle journey is way above our progression pay grade. Us being old three or four chord former bluegrass and now blues folks. But that assuredly doesn't keep us from enjoying it. The sea shanty vibe was effective, the narrative was clever and the mix is ace on the monitors. Nice vocals as always and we like 'em out front. Fun! J&B

"Which chords did you use?" "All of them" Your song sounds much simpler than it actually is. I enjoyed my listen. Thanks for the detailed explanation of how it's done.

Andrew, J&B, BD, David...as a keyboard-oriented person, "the circle" is always easy and at-hand..I wondered if you could run thru all of them and make a tune out of it...I guess the answer is "yes"! Thanks for the feedback!

I've always grown up or lived near port towns, so I very much appreciated the theme of the lyrics. Very fun!

Tom, really fun tune, LOVE those changes. Very eclectic but instantly likable...that's a rare combination, but you've nailed it. I really like the character of your voice a lot, and your phrasing is perfect for your material. It does sound like you're singing through a kazoo to me, which is probably not what you were going for. Know there's a more complimentary vocal FX chain for you out there. But I STILL love your tune.

Ember and Ron..thanks for listening. I was trying to make myself sound like a “hearty sea-faring soul”..maybe that explains the strange texture to my vocal!

Love this. The chord progression is incredibly well done (the variation on the cycle of fifths is superb. For me, it would have been difficult to sing along with those changes of harmony. You make it sound so easy!). Well done!

James, thanks. I've been relying on Melodyne to "correct" my natural singing...does wonders!

That key midi - concertina? = made for an interesting intro. This evokes a sense of the wharfs. Nicely done. One of my faves.
