Hi!

After updating to BIAB 2025, the program and all dialog boxes insists on opening on one my extended displays instead of the main display. If I drag the main BIAB window over to the main display, the dialog boxes still appears on the extended display. This was not the case before updating.

I`m on a Mac Studio M1, Sequoia 15.5. I'm not using "separate Spaces" for the displays.

Any ideas on how to solve this? I`m not a very experienced BIAB user (yet), so please excuse me if this is a obvious setting somewhere which I've missed.

How many displays?

What are they?

How are they connected (be specific)? USB-C doesn’t mean a thing—it’s a port and not a protocol. The Studio supports Thunderbolt, HDMI and DisplayPort over USB-C plus HDMI from a dedicated port.

Does this still happen after a reboot? Does it change after wake from sleep?

Apple has issues with multiple displays that have never been fixed. Some of them we can control; others are waiting on Apple, unfortunately. After I got my Studio in 2023, I had to demonstrate some of these problems to a group of engineers in Cupertino. Fortunately, the Apple mothership is only two miles away from where I live.

Yes, there are issues with multiple displays on Mac, and has been for quite a while. However, this behavior started after updating BIAB to 2025 and it only affects BIAB. No other things has changed in my setup. FWIW, all three displays are using HDMI. Main display and the first extended display, both 27" monitors, uses HDMI over USB-C. The third extended display, a Samsung 50" TV, uses the dedicated Mac Studio HDMI port. This is the display that BIAB defaults to after updating to 2025, regardless of which display is set to be the main display.

It's the same after rebooting or wake from sleep.

I guess I could start using Spaces and just assign BIAB to a dedicated Space, but then I loose the ability to drag windows across multiple displays.

Does it do the same if you switch the 50” to one of the USB-C ports and one of the 27” to the HDMI?

The Mac Studio lives in a dedicated machine room. I have a noisy Avid HDX-2 rig plus a few AD/DA's and a couple of reverb mainframes with fans in there, so the cableruns for the displays are quite long. The 27 inches has no trouble with HDMI over USB at those lengths, but I wasn't able the get the 50" to work reliable with HDMI over USB. I ended up using an active HDMI cable from the Mac Studio's build in HDMI port in order for it to work reliable in all resolutions. I'll give it another try, it would be interesting to see if that changed anything.

But again, this is not a problem with any other software. The only exception I have seen is the Altiverb 8 installer window which also for some reason appears on the TV. :-) I can't help but think this might be an issue with the BIAB software build.

I know this is a minor problem, but when a session moves fast it is a bit annoying to constantly have to drag dialog windows from a display suspended from the ceiling, a place usually reserved for displaying video when composing.

There have been reports of multiple-display issues with BIAB 2025 on the Mac.

Unlike others, you actually answered my questions instead of trying to make me read your mind. Thank you for that.

Although Apple is having multi-display issues on the Studio and M series Mini, your symptoms are not on my list of problems that Apple has yet to fix. I'm pretty sure that what you are describing is BIAB and not Apple.

Here are the current Apple issues:

Windows and icons open on the Right display shift to the Left display and vise-versa after the displays go to sleep, then wake up. Rebooting or restarting restores the original problem. Benign but annoying.

Displays connected via DisplayPort wake up every 15–45 seconds once they go to sleep. The only workaround is connect via USB-C to HDMI. This is the one I had to demonstrate in Cupertino before anyone would believe me. I still have my DP cables and test now and then to see it hasn't been fixed.

There are others.

My center display is the current 27" Studio connected by a USB 4 (TB3/4) or USB 4.2 (TB3/4/5) cable. Changing it from my main to a side display has no effect on the symptoms described above.

Thank you for your help and deep-dive into Mac display related issues. smile I´ll send a message to PG support, I think there is enough arguments and evidence to make a case for this.

Which monitor is the one that has the menu bar on it? You can find this by going into System Settings > Displays, then clicking on the Arrange button in the lower right.

[Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]

Whichever monitor has the menu bar is considered the "primary" monitor, as far as macOS is concerned. From my testing, there are some dialogs that always pop up on the primary monitor, which I've reported to the developers with bug id# 5070. As a workaround, try moving your menubar from the Samsung to one of the smaller monitors (click and drag the grey bar in the Arrange window in System Settings > Displays).

The Menu Bar migrates to the active monitor that you have clicked on, Primary or Sides.

Right, I do recall this. I don't normally use multiple monitors so it slipped my mind. macOS Tahoe doesn't do this anymore though.

Regardless, the presence of the ghost/floating menubar in older versions doesn't actually designate a monitor as primary vs secondary, and this still needs to be done manually following the steps I posted above.

I've tried moving the menu bar to the other display(s), making it primary, but it doesn´t matter. BIAB always opens on the display connected to the Mac's built-in HDMI port, which is the 50" Samsung.

The thing that makes this a bit annoying is the fact that context menus also appears on the extended, non-primary display, even after the main BIAB window has been dragged to the primary display. And context menus are not draggable, so I'm stuck with BIAB context menus always appearing near the ceiling on my setup. See attached picture for example. Here, I've dragged the main BAIB window down from the extended display to the primary 27" after launch, but the context menus still appear on the extended display. BTW, extended display 3 is off to the side and not in the picture. I've attached a screenshot showing the Arrange window.

To sum it up: BIAB thinks the extended non-primary display is the primary display. BIAB Mac Version 2025 (902).

Thanks for looking into this. :-)

That’s not correct. I have Tahoe beta 2 on one of my test drives. Monitor behavior is the same as earlier macOS.

My M2 Ultra Studio has the Apple Studio Display (Main) connected via TB4 plus two LG 4K displays—one connected to the HDMI port; the other connected via a USB-C to HDMI cable.

So....any update on this? I tried using BIAB again today to sketch out some quick ideas, but constantly having to tilt my head 45 degrees to look for context menus and dialog boxes makes it nearly impossible to work efficiently. And definitely not comfortable.

It would be good to know if PG is able to reproduce this behavior, and if it's being worked on or not. Any news is good news. :-)
