Common mp3 - 128/44 stereo (this the most accepted format for uploading to sites) Higher bitrates sound better but add size and may not work for some sites.
common wave file -16/44 (CD quality)
for windows media files, common WMA format is also 128kbps (usually defined as cd quality by windows media player)
That should get you started.
