This is Swamp Mama, a funny song I wrote years ago under my artist name (Emory Martin) and that nobody wanted to play, so I finally got BIAB (2024 Audiophile) and did it myself (styles _EVER and _YALL, with _DUPPY for the bridge, and mixed in Sonar), with help from Audimee on the vocals.

I grew up in a low-lying, swampy area in Alabama and the story told by the song is not entirely fictitious.

Swamp Mama (on Soundcloud)

Swamp Mama

I was down in the Delta where diamondbacks thrive
And the gnats and mosquitoes use forks and knives,
Where the scum grows thick and the water flows black
When I came to a broken-down tin-roof shack.

There was a woman on the porch with a corn-cob pipe
But somethin' 'bout her didn't look quite right.
She had long green hair a-hangin' down like vines
And her face sent a shiver right down my spine.

She looked at me and cracked a great big smile,
Teeth so yellow you could see 'em for miles.
She said, "It's 'bout time. How do ya do?
Come on in, I been waitin' for you! I'm a

Swaaaamp Mama! Been lookin' for a man to please. I wanna
Whooole lotta ever'thing a Swamp Mama needs!
I want someone who's gonna hold me tight,
and keep me warm on the cold swamp nights.
And if you're good to me, I'll be good to you
'cause you know Swamp Mamas need lovin' too."

Well her long bony fingers wrapped 'round my throat
And she lifted me up right out of the boat.
She set me down hard and dragged me on in
and said, "Have a seat, Hon, we're ‘bout to begin.

I'm gonna fry us up the gator I killed last night
And we'll have a little dinner by candlelight.
Then we'll dance a jig while the jitterbugs croon
And make sweet swamp love by the light of the moon."

So we had us some supper, then she got kinda close
And I muttered out loud, "This is gonna be gross."
She said, "Shut your mouth, sweetie, and open your mind.
've looked forward to this for a long, long time, ‘cause I'm a

Swaaaamp Mama! Been lookin' for a man to please. I wanna
Whooole lotta ever'thing a Swamp Mama needs!
I want somebody's gonna hold me tight,
and keep me warm on the cold swamp nights.
And if you're good to me, I'll be good to you
'cause you know Swamp Mamas need lovin' too."

Next mornin', as the mist gave way to the sun,
I thought to myself, "A new life has begun."
And I reached out and touched the Swamp Mama's arm
As she lay there beside me, all slimy and warm.

She opened her eyes and said, "Good Lord willin',
we'll have a big mess of little bitty swamp chillun."
Now ever'thing's diff'rent to the way that it was
And that's how I learned 'bout the meaning of love, from a

Swaaaamp Mama! Guess it musta been my destiny to be a
Swaaaamp Daddy, with a big swamp family.
Now I got somebody's gonna hold me tight,
and keep me warm on the cold swamp nights.
And I ain't never gonna be untrue
'cause you know Swamp Daddies need lovin' too.

Background singers:
Swamp Daddies need lovin’ too,
Swamp Daddies need lovin’ too,

Background singers:

I sure do like this one! I love swampy sounds! Years ago, I wrote a song called "Midnight In The Swamp". "Sweet swamp love". Ha! I love it.!

I'm turning that song into a novel (I'm also an author). The swamp holds so many mysteries and so much intrigue.

Love your deep voice - a true baritone.. And the way you wove the vocals together at the end was great.

Swampy good!

Alan

Thank you for the kind words! I notice you live in Alabama now. I grew up in a rural area east of Montgomery and had a pretty healthy respect for the swampy parts there - there were snakes, alligators, and in fact also a broken-down tin-roof shack on posts in the middle of a flooded area covered with scummy, black water, which terrified me as a kid - I had no idea if anyone still lived there then and if so, who. (And that's what I was thinking of when I wrote the song)

WOW! That's a pretty terrifying scene! Interesting, I mentioned previously that I'm an author in addition to a songwriter. I'm three chapters away from finishing a historical fiction tha\t is set very close to where you said you grew up. It's a fictitious town about 40 miles south of Selma. It would be near the area between what is now Camden and Alberta. I did six months of research of that area and its history before writing a single word. I live in Priceville, AL,which is adjacent to Decatur. I'm originally from St. Louis, MO. I've been here 11 years and still can't make "yes" a three-syllable word!

Very interesting!

Again, I enjoyed your song very much. BTW, here are lyrics to that song I told you about in my initial reply:

Midnight In The Swamp
© January 2007 Alan D. David, BMI
All Rights Reserved

((Music Intro)

(v1)
It always makes me nervous
When I look into the sky
I see that full moon rising
As the daylight starts to die
That Loosi-ana Bayou
Takes on a whole new face
As shadows and black magic
Take o’er that haunted place

(v2)
Your skin will crawl with goose bumps
Your hair will stand on end
Static charges through the air
As the midnight sun sets in
The swamp takes on an aura
Like no man could ever know
As the Mistress of the Darkness
Casts her spell of ebb and flow

(Chorus)
Moonlight weaving shadows
As the critters play and romp
Bayous all flow backwards
When it’s midnight in the swamp
When evil spirits moan their chant
Their sonnets chill and daunt
No mortal man should be there
When it’s midnight in the swamp

(v3)
Nothing like you’ve ever heard
Wind passing through the threads
Plays its arcane symphony
On the silken spider webs
The swamp goes spooky silent
Just before it starts to shake
And in a pirogue left behind
Alligators dance with snakes

(v4)
When the moon starts falling
‘Fore night breaks into day
A hush spreads cross the bayou
As the magic fades away
The eerie frolic ceases
As the daylight filters in
But it’s just a few short hours
‘Til the madness starts again

Repeat Chorus

(Music Outro)

Until next time:

Alan

Fun song. Excellent dynamics. Love those vocals. The perfect band, and good idea bringing the baritone. Perfect swampy band, and production, John.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Welcome John! This is a terrific song with a good story. I’m not normally a lyrics kind of guy but it held me in, and for a couple of repeats. Good work on the vocals (male and female) and love it when the ‘sweet swamp love’ comes in. That voice box effect on the guitar is very tasty as well. That backing band with its funky JJ Cale style rhythm was a great choice as well.
I had a sneaky listen to ‘What could go wrong’ on SC while I was there. I hope you continue to post gems like these.

Nice job on this, you got a Jimmy Dean "Big Bad John" delivery that worked perfectly for this cut. Really enjoyed it.

Really good song on every level: lyrically, arrangement, mix and production. I particularly liked the variations in the vocals, plus well done for putting that solo in there.

John, welcome! Super job on this. Nice band and smooth dynamic flow. Not sure which parts of this are Audimee and which aren't, but the vocals turned out nice either way. Vocals might be a LITTLE loud, but it's certainly easy to absorb the lyrics with the mix the way you have it. Definitely would make Tony Joe White proud. Well done!

Excellent. The lyrics are terrific and tell a great story. Great vocal dynamics from the start, swamp mama and then swamp dada. Really well thought out song. Can’t understand why no one wanted to play it with you.

Kind regards

PS. If Swamp Mama isn’t entirely fictitious, could you PM me her number?

Welcome to the family. That is crazy good. I'll bet that took a bit of work to pull that off.

Many thanks, Ron! You're right with the vocals (good ear) - in the original mix they were drowned out by the other tracks, so I experimented with voice doubling and adding parallel compression to the lead voice tracks - those techniques yanked the voices into the foreground, but I agree I overdid the compression a little, which made things a little harsh.

Hi John,
When I first saw your name on the forum, I was taken aback because my publisher and ex's best man is a John Hunt. Pretty sure though he'd never be able to write a swampy epic like this. It's a hoot! Glad that BIAB served you well.

That was fun!

We've done our share of swampy blues and have been Tony Joe fans for years.
All meaning we fell right into this one.

Well done,

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo.
