Gypries [No Tramps Or Thieves

This is one I've been working on as time permits over the past several days 6 or 7 total hours cumulatively.

I tried to capture the Django - Grappelli sound but applied a bit of a contemporary twist. I think it came out pretty decent. Looking forward to hearing what you think.

No gypsies were harmed in the making of this song. And as far as I know, the same applies to tramps and thieves, but they didn't reply to my survey asking about that. Cher pretty much ignored me, too. Oh well!

Hope you might like it .

Alan

PS: I've wrtten, or co-written with Di, about 2700 songs. This is only one of three songs from that total on which I used an accordion. My maternal grandfather, Carl Crouch, once told me the definition of a true gentleman is a man who knows how to play the accordion very well - but doesn't.

Alan,

Wow! Very cool! That is an awesome sound. I think you nailed the Django - Grappelli vibe. Not easy to do, but you did it here. I also think the mix and flow is exceptional on this piece. It's like listening to something in the 40s, but with better fidelity and a more thoughtful arrangement.

EXCELLENT!

Hi Alan!
Several times you caught me out - ‘surely it’s not over yet!’ … and then it springs back to life for another dose of goodness. This was a tune where I was eagerly awaiting to hear where each phrase went and what the next chord was - even though the whole retained familiarity.
Well done - that put a spring in my step.
Andrew
PS Love the accordion joke.

Hi Andrew,

It's always great to hear from you. Thank you for those real nice words. Keeping the listener interested is, of course, our goal with the music we make. I'm delighted to hear this one kept you engaged and wondering where the next musical turn would take you. That's a very gernerous comment. Thank you!

Best,

Alan

Wow, that is fantastic. Really enjoyed it. I’m I right in thinking that everything was out of BIAB, no instruments were played by a human. Either way, if BiAB did everything..magic, if you were playing guitar, then look out Tommy Emmanuel.

Tremendous!

That was really kind of you to say! thank you very much!!!

Tommy Emmauel is one of my very favorite guitarists. he doesn't have to worry about any competition from me! I played lead guitar in several country bands for over 50 years and made a very good living doing so. But I['m not at his calibre. Richard Smith, from England, is another of my favorites.

Again, thank you very much for the kindness and time to listen and comment so nicely,

Alan

Ah, what does Cher know? When I saw the word Gypsie I immediatley thought of Django --then Cannonball Adderly. No accounting for this no-account. Now I'm thinking of Noah Count.

So afte4r all that, it's time to repush Play. Now all I think of his how cool this is, Alan. Man, that's some speed picing there. What a treat!! Terrific instrumentation, and excellent mix. I especially like the trading of solos.

FYI -- I am an excellent accordion player. No proof required.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Al, you captured that era perfectly and in fact I wanted to go outside, sit on one of our chairs, and drink wine!
You made those RTs sound like a live band - brilliant. Super mix also.
One of your best.

Quintette du Hot Club de Alan! That's a heavy swing your band has goin' on here, and it makes me want to dance. Not that that would be enjoyable for anyone but me. Like the dramatic pauses, they really make the tune breathe. Super mix with every instrument in the right space. Nice one!

Loved it! It's great to see those RTs get some use, they've been around a while and have sat dormant for the most part. I've tried playing along with them but that BPM is too much for me. Great job, Alan!

Thank ya, Marty. Loved that Noah Count ditty! But you count in my book! At the possible expense of sounding a bit self-aggrandizing, I was a pretty good picker in my day, but I never could pick like this.

What I enjoyed about putting this one together is how well the accordion and piano supported everything else. They give it a little flash and somewhat of a live soundscape.

I'll take your word you are an excellent accordion player. But I'm not sure my grandfather would have suggested you pull it out of the case and play a song for him. One of my previous wives played accordion. It was a really old one from the 1930s. When we were in Germany in the 12970s we had it totally refurbished. She was delighted with the craftsmanship they used in the effort.

Glad you like liked the song. Thaks for letting me know!

Alan

I'm not much of a wine drinker, but I would have joined around the wine table. Ya shoulda called!

Thanks for the very nice words. I mentioned in a previous reply that I thought the piano and accordion brought a live feel to the production.

Django and Grappelli rarely used a drummer, but I found a non-intrusive one and went with that. Also, there's a faint synth in the background just to cover any quite bits (there weren't many of those!). It wasn't very obvious as you listened, but when I dropped it out as i was deciding whether or not to use it, you could easily tell the difference. So, I guess I mixed it in correctly.

Thanks again.

Alan

Good to hear from you, Chay. I've not been very active here lately - still have a few legal issues to tend to relating to Di's death. Got all the major issues resolved, though. Just a few pesky ones to take care of.

Thank you for the very nice comments. I was thinking about you as I mixed in the fiddle, as I know you're not fond of some instrumentals that utilize only one lead instrument throughout the piece.

Thanks much for the visit and nice comments.

Hi Ron,

Uh ... I never got that place up and going, but when I lived in Germany, i did play at a place called Club Kazabra many times. I guess that doesn't count, though.

Regarding the pauses, I decided to use them at the end of each verse and chorus because the music was so intense. I thought it would give the listener a chance to breathe - also the music. The mix came together rather quickly. Everything just fell into place. And the mastering brought the accordion up the volume level of the piano without making the accordion sound " brassy" and thin. i got lucky that everything came together so quickly just the way I wanted it to. I'd like for that to happen a little more often!

Thanks for the very nice words, Ron. best ...

Alan

Hello, Bob!

It's always nice when you drop in for a listen and leave a comment. Yeah, Gypsy Jazz is not for those who can't do music at super-sonic speed! I love the genre and dabble in it off and on. Once upon a time I could play that fast (I was noted for my speed within the circle of musicians I worked with and listened to) but I wasn't always clean when I did. I can still play pretty close to that speed using the chicken pickin' approach. I'm still okay up to 165 bpm. if the disease I have that affects my hands isn't flaring up. The disease is focal dystonia, if you want to find out about. Mine is focal dystonia affecting my hands. It can affect various parts of the body.

Anyway, thanks for the listen and the most excellent comments. I appreciate them!

Alan

A long departed music mate of ours could nail Grappelli on fiddle (one of the reasons he was grammy nominated).
He only increased our love of Gypsy Jazz so listening to this is a genuine pleasure.
And the more modern touches make it even more interesting. Amazing band all around.

Your skill with all BiaB session guy bands is always standout. And as always you wrap all in a good mix.

No problem at all with accordion. Well, then there's polka. smile

Engaging, fun and well done!

Alan, I'll just have to remain a pretender on accordion! Wow you are a master at the use of realtreaks production! There is nobody better in the forum IMO!

Alan, I know you've been through a lot recently, but it does my heart good to see you hanging in there and making wonderful music! It's so inspiring to me!

Take care, TB

Flippin' eck! This was wonderful! There's a lot of this kind of thing where I live, and a lot of it tends to sound alike (a friend of mine joked once that it's really all just one song). This stands out in so many ways. It's just alive and full of expression! Well done.
