"Movin' Slow"
---------------------------------
Ever since I got a case of potter's rot,
I can't seem to make it up the stair;
So you'll find me sleepin' in the corner.
By the kitchen window.
It's open, I need the fresh air.

The only speed I know now is adagio.
Ain't got juice enough to build up steam;
So I had to own it long ago,
I'd be movin' kinda slow,
And the truth is, I'm just glad to be here.

You know, once I was a rocket--they called me "Flash"!
Coulda taken Owens and owned the dash;
But now I'm out of fuel,
I'm like a tired old pack mule--
MOVIN' SLOW.

Now I like to contemplate the butterfly,
Watching him flutterin' and dancin' by;
All the while, I watch the flowers grow;
Sure, I'm movin' kinda slow,
But the truth is, I'm so glad to be alive.

Note: After I found this "stride" style in BIAB and built my chord structure, I just slapped a name on it when I saved the file--'movin' slow'..then later decided "hey, that's a pretty good title/story idea!" and created the lyric from the title. Also, "potter's rot"--something I never heard of until I needed to find a country-like word for an illness that might slow someone down, so now you know!

Ha, here's how old I am. When I read the title I thought of, "Here's Uncle joe. He's movin' kinda slow at the Junction. Petticoat Junction." I KNOW your song is gonna be much better than that, Tom.

"Potter's rot." And my favorite; "The only speed I know now is adagio." I love that piano. Man, I love those clever lyrics, and a fun slow song. Well done, and a fine mix, Tom.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Tom,

It's a clever and entertaining little piece! I love the sparse arrangement that supports your vocal perfectly!
The little scat section was cool!

"But now I'm out of fuel,
I'm like a tired old pack mule--
MOVIN' SLOW"

Boy, can I relate to that these days!
Good tune!

Take care, TB

Hi, Tom.

A jaunty tune for going slow.

But now I'm out of fuel,
I'm like a tired old pack mule--
MOVIN' SLOW.

Cool bit of verse with an interesting setting.

Fun song! smile

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

The sparse mix of backing instruments is unusual these days, but it works well with those quirky insightful lyrics. Nice job!

Potter's Rot had me worried. It has had a new life with "engineered stone" cutting but that's been outlawed in Australia for the last 18months.
While your vocal isn't classic or genre tied it works and an album of your songs would see your tones embedded as "classic" & idiosyncratically cool.

Thanks, all.. as a keyboardist, I really like the stride genre, esp the left-hand walking 10ths...this was fun to do! I appreciate the feedback and encouragement!

Tom, would you quit spying on me laugh
I can really relate to this song mad If I was any slower I would be going backwards wink
Loved the arrangement on this song. Your vocal was super and the lyrics were very funny and unfortunately true.
Loved it.

Tom, super use of this seldom-seen-here-but-excellent BiaB style. You have a fine ear for these classic song forms and consistently wrap them in appropriately quirky and compelling lyrics. Really like your vocals when they have minimal (to my ears) processing as they fit the song style quite well, and your phrasing is excellent. Nice job!

Floyd, Ron.. Thanks so much for listening to my stride project. I think if I had to say what the objective is for my music-writing avocation, I'd say I'm trying to be sort of a "contract" songwriter.. adept enough to write in any style or genre might be requested of me, especially these offbeat ones that I choose.. anyhow, that's what I'm working toward and how I use BIAB.

Fun and quirky song! It sounds like it should have a cartoon video for it,

Now that is both humorous and cleverly written.

We enjoyed the vocal and Janice is always down with a scat. Yeah man.

And as always we enjoy your open live sounding mixes.
Nice band and we also like the stride piano.

Good production all around!

Thanks for helping keep this smooth club style genre alive.

Tano:

Man, that piano track is just killer—totally captures the vibe of the song. Nice percussion choice as well. I might move the vocal just a tad back in the mix, but that’s more preference than need. Terrific write as well. The whole song just has a sweet, cool vibe. Enjoyed it much!!

I LOVE this honky-tonk piano sound, and the way you sing makes it sound like you're playing live in a bar.
Really well done!
