This is a song that I wrote back in 2022 but, for some reason that I can't recall now, I never got around to finishing it. When I was doing a back up of my songs recently, I stumbled across it and was inspired. So with the help of Kevin 2 (in Synth V), I set about trying to create some kind of respectable arrangement. This is where tinkering with BIAB, Synth V and Reaper took me. Comments on any aspect of the song or its production are welcome. I hope you enjoy it. --Noel The BandBass RT 533: Bass, Electric, 12-8 Crystal Sw 065 Guitar RT 526: Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking Hank Sw 065 Guitar RT 529: Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Hank Sw 065 Piano RT 2167: Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm Country12-8John Sw 065 RealDrums: Nashville128^01-SideStick,Ride MIDI Strings: Miroslav Philharmonik 2 MIDI Vocals: Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro with the vocaloid Kevin 2 The ProductionDrums, Reaper Plugins: (1) **JS: 3 Band Splitter in conjunction with (2) JS: 8xStereo to 1xStereo Mixer, (3) JS: Waveshaping Distortion Bass, VST Plugins: (1) Renaissance Bass (RBass), (2) GSatPlus Piano, VST Plugin: (1) **GSatPlus Guitars, VST Plugins: (1) **ReaEQ, (2) GSatPlus, (3) Renaissance Axx (Stereo), (4) CLA Unplugged (Stereo) Reverb Busses: (1) ReaVerbate, (2) M30 (TC Electronic) Vocals: (1) ReaEQ, (2) ReaComp, (3) Nectar 4 Master Output: (1) Ozone 11, (2) ReaLimit Visual & Audio Aids Used with Mixing and Production: (1) JS: Saike Spectral Analyzer (beta), (2) Nx Virtual Mix Room (headphones mixing plugin) with (i)CLA, (ii)Germano and (iii)Ocean Way studio simulations (I didn't use head tracking). **JS plugins are native to Reaper **Plugins that begin with Rea... Noel, Very cool chord progression. Mozart-like? Gotta say, I'd rather hear Noel sing this.... Nice, appropriate production. Strings just where they should be.. Good mix. Hope all is well on your side of the world. Always great to see a Noel Song post.... fj

Noel,
There is something very beautiful and melancholy about this song. It has the same appeal to me as "Puff The Magic Dragon".
Great use of SynthV - the vocal perfectly fits with the feel of the song. And love the mix - one of your very best!
EXCELLENT!

Hi floyd. It's good to see you "Mozart-like" chord progression? That's very astute of you. Seriously!!! It's not Mozart, but it was written in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini, one of Mozart's contemporaries. Around 80% of the chord progression I've used belongs to Martini's classical French love song called "Plasir D'Amour". I was zig-zagging around Youtube and landed on an old Nana Mouskouri video. I found both the song and her singing really captured my imagination, so I opened BIAB and things went from there. It turns out that Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss were also once inspired by this same song and they used it as the basis for Elvis Presley's 1961 hit, "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You". Thanks for your comments. I really appreciate them. I think my singing days are probably over (or maybe confined to the shower at best). When I got Covid in 2022, it impacted on my voice (and getting old doesn't help all that much, either). Fortunately, Synth V and BIAB make it possible for me to still be able write and make music. That's fine by me! Thanks again for taking the time to listen and pass on your thoughts. --Noel P.S. Things going fine here in my part of the southern hemisphere, thanks for asking. Compared to what I read about the USA at the moment, life in Australia is very straightforward, predictable and enjoyable

Hi Bob. Thanks for dropping in. It's always a pleasure to see you Thank you for finding the time to have a listen. That's a really interesting comment about "Puff The Magic Dragon". You are correct. There is a similar quality that's common to that song and "This Tree". I wonder if it's anything to do with the fact that both use a I to iii (C to Em, in the key of C major) chord progression in leading phrases. The vi minor chord (Am in the key of C major) also features fairly often in both progressions. By the way, I love the song "Puff The Magic Dragon", and I very clearly remember learning to sing Peter, Paul and Mary's version in primary school when I was around 9 or 10 years old. It's a song that always fills my mind with pleasant memories. Thanks again and all the best! --Noel

Stunning. Honestly, stunning. I would recognise a song of yours miles away, I think. Ok, the voice (if I am to nit-pick) doesn't quite do justice to the song. It's an artificial voice, what is one to expect? Certainly not perfection, in that regard ... the technology is simply not yet there. HOWEVER: my word. What. A. Beautiful. Song. Everything (other than the slightly imperfect rendition of the voice) is superbly done. The lyrics are beautiful, the melody is compelling, the musical writing is exceptional. Most of all, you tell a moving story, Noel. That's what you do with every song of yours; every song is different, yet every song invariably moves me to tears. This one's no exception. Thank you for sharing your songs with us. You really are one of my utter favourite songwriters, not just on this forum, but anywhere. You post far too rarely for my liking, haha ... but, when you do share a song with us, I drop everything, I go listen, and I've never been disappointed. Again, thank you. You know how to move humans. P.S. you were mentioning my "songbook" in a post you made, reacting to my last song. Well, speaking for myself at least, YOUR songbook puts mine (at least) to shame And that's never a bad thing ... I'm so happy to hear such beautiful music as yours is. Loved it, once more!

Hi Noel! I love that middle section with the chord progression outside of main key - sections/bridges like yours really add a lot to a song. I found the vocal gave me the impression of the singer himself being strong and sturdy - maybe the lower pitches used?
I was expecting something different for the outro phrase - expecting ‘I’ll be as steadfast as this TREE’ rather than ‘I’ll be as steadfast as THIS tree’, but I can see why the emphasis was on the specific.
I really enjoyed this song. Glad to be sharing this part of the world with you.
Andrew PS I’ve been meaning to ask you about the meaning of your profile pic - Ukraine … but don’t know about 96?

Noel, clever reimagining of the most difficult song form of all: the love song. Very pretty tune, and nicely arranged. So glad you've been able to find a synth vocal surrogate to help you continue to create tunes like this. Think Kevin 2 fills the role well enough to convey the meaning of the song and provide an enjoyable listening experience. Would be neat if a "live" vocalist grabbed this one one day though.

Noel, You always wright and produce such lovely songs! I'm glad you dug this one back up and gave it a proper treatment! Your melodies are always so memorable after the song ends and that's a wonderful thing! Thanks for sharing your talent with us! Thanks, TB

I'm so happy to hear such beautiful music as yours is. Loved it, once more! Hi James. It's good to see you. Thank you heaps for visiting the thread and having a listen to my song. Honestly, I'm totally blown away by your comments (once again), and I don't know what to say (once again). I've spent a great deal of time over the years learning about lyrics. When I started learning how to create lyrics in 2006, I had no idea what to do or how to do it. These days, I seem to have a much better understanding thanks to the works of Floyd Jane, reading a ton of books on lyrics and poetry, and seminars with Pat Pattison, Steve Seskin and Beth Nielsen Chapman (and a couple of others that I can't recall at the moment) My biggest hurdle was trying to understand how to make a lyric develop emotional intensity so that the unfolding journey becomes worthwhile for the listener. While I still have lots of room for growth in this last area, comments like yours help me see that I'm getting somewhere and that I should keep on persevering. That's why your comments are very valuable to me. One of my personal songwriting aims is to be able to write a lyric journey as satisfying to listen to as Beth Nielsen Chapman's song, "Sand and Water". Every time I listen to this song, it's like the first time. Thank you so much for listening and for all that you have said. --Noel P.S. My 'songbook' is non-existent At least I have my songs saved in a couple of places in case my computer goes haywire.

Hi, Noel. Nice write! It's got the hallmark of your writing: nice melody, positive lyrics, interesting phrasing, unusual vocabulary (example: "hurricane"). Bits of alliteration as well I thought the production served the song well. However, I feel like SynthV really let you down - it sounds like a synthetic vocal. It's pleasant to listen to, but there's no dynamics. It's almost like someone auto-tuned the life out of it. Kevin's English is great, but he doesn't seem to know how to sing. I see you've got GSatPlus on a number of tracks. I've got that on a browser tab, I just haven't downloaded it yet. I enjoyed this song a lot!

PS I’ve been meaning to ask you about the meaning of your profile pic - Ukraine … but don’t know about 96? Hi Andrew. Thanks for having a listen. I appreciate your feedback as it gives me a useful insight. From what you say, it seems that my song seems to be working as intended. Thanks for that In relation to the outro phrase, for me, the musical emphasis definitely needed to be on 'this' rather than 'tree' because the singer is talking about this particular tree and not any other one (just like I would if I were saying it conversationally). Regarding the '96'. When I joined PG Music, the name Noel was already in use so I needed to add a number to it. I thought that '96' was far enough into the numbers to be a safe choice Thanks again. --Noel

Realistically, though, I suspect that that is not likely to happen. I write songs as a hobby, and I'm glad that I get the chance to be able to post them somewhere. That's plenty for me If it wasn't for Synth V, this song would have remained incomplete on the shelf. Thanks again. --Noel

Lovely subject in a world where trees are mostly seen only as a source material for products. But you give life to that tree, a purpose to exist on its own. You beautifully describe its characteristic, long life and fights through hard times, and also its importance to you. And finally you use it as a metaphor for lasting love. Excellent storytelling!
Enjoyable arrangement, first the piano, the the rest of the band and then the strings. The chord progression sounds very pleasant and the melody is quite universal. I read your comment about the influences, you have combined them and made the song sound like a genuine Noel song.
I have no real complaints about Kevin's voice, I like how Kevin sounds like your inner voice, albeit a little hoarse and emotionless this time. Maybe the range is bit too low or its bit too masculine, because your previous Kevin songs have sounded better.
Janne

It's a fabulous thing. I agree with Floyd regarding the option for vocalist though. Hi Ray. Thanks. I appreciate that you had a chance to have a listen. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that my days as a singer are done. On the other side of that coin, though, I'm very fortunate to have synthesized voices available. They still opens the music-making door for me All the best, --Noel

Oooo, happy when I'm right; it WAS me that messed up. What a terrific song Noel. I love the changes and the melody you drape around them. Oh, you are a wonderful tinkerer, Noel. So glad you found this among the backup. Great choice on the synth, too. Those strings you added are perfect, and support --or demand-- the changes. What a treat.
