Listen To The Silence

We live in a noisy world, human-made noise is all around us, traffic, construction work etc. And even though we would like to enjoy a leisure activity, we go to a forest with boomboxes, to a rock concert or a ball game, where excitement is artificially created with loud music and advertisements. Many nature sounds are hidden under the constant background noise, or in the worst case, they may have disappeared completely without us noticing... This is a hymn to that lost silence. I hope you enjoy it, but you may of course turn down the volumn and listen to the real silence instead laugh

The wonderful and relaxing band was naturally provided by BIAB together with the additional strings by The Orchestra. When working with the outro, it reminded me of Coldplay so I used a Coldplay song as Ozone reference track.

I asked comments from AI for the lyrics and I changed two words based on AI's suggestions. AI was more heavily involved in the video I had time to make for the song, but it didn't add any noise smile

Lyrics:

Somewhere between the airport and the speedway
there once was an arbor my haven on its heyday
among mice, butterflies, pure peace no worry
no barriers of sound, no hooters of the hurry

Listen to the silence
through all the noise around
hear when a crowd makes no sound.
Listen to the silence
not the man-made machine
but the holy evergreen.

Once we got thrilled by watching calm of blossom
Today the trend is: the louder the more awesome
I live now in the grave of foregone glory
they buried long ago the stillness of satori

Listen to the silence
through all the noise around
hear when a crowd makes no sound.
Listen to the silence
not the man-made machine
but the holy evergreen.

Call me an ecofascist or call me a jerk
but I just get annoyed by the loudest fireworks
don't listen to me, hush cacophony for a while
perceive the treasures lost in exile.

Nice work. It's calm, musically. I enjoyed the listen.

I appreciate the silence, or the quiet calm of the woods and the sounds of the wind in the trees, or the rush of the water over the rocks in my creeks. It's good to disconnect the noise and get back to the soothing sounds of nature.

Thoroughly enjoyed both SC, which arguable has better quality sound, and the YT vid, which may arguable have better silence (I dunno what that means, but I love the song). The silence we seek is trampled by admen-made noises that do not want us to think. We spend more thoughtlessly, mindlessly. Man, you filled the silence with some incredible music here, Janne. What a great group you've curated. Good choice on the synth too. I was trying to figure out what two words the Ai changed, but could only come up with "the" if you origianlly had an "a."
So were these the original lyrics: "Somewhere between an airport and a speedway"? A terrific video you've created too. I imaged this song being played while all of the sounds infered on the vid were actually heard. Man, you have a masterpiece here, Janne.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Janne,

It's a beautiful track! I've always been impressed with your skill at melodic composition! The haunting melody in the verses here really grabbed my attention! Love the laid-back melancholy feel of the whole song! Great arrangement and instrumental choices!

Thanks, TB

Hi Janne,

There are a lot of things I like about this song. The subject for one. That you rhymed glory with satori (I'm impressed!). And the chosen BPM...perfect. And the interesting layering of instruments.

I really liked the video with the song. It was a meditative experience with the visuals added.

Hi Janne! A good song and a thought-proking message. I really appreciated the final minute or so, allowing time to listen and ponder. Good video as well. I liked the nature scenes, and was bothered by the ‘noisy’ scenes, and I guess that’s the point. I get quite bothered by advertising nowadays - so in-your-face or in-your-ears.

Janne, what a fantastic song. Loved your synth vocals and especially the lyrics. Super arrangement and chord progression. Loved those strings! Outstanding mix.

Loved it.

Hey Janne,

Great subject matter for this song and well thought through lyrically and musically. The production was excellent. I was reminded during the chorus of David Bowies Blackstar album, just a few similarities there. The chord variations in the verses took me by surprise and they worked well. My only criticism, and it’s something I need to watch myself, during the verses there were a couple of times the music was louder than the vocal, so I couldn’t understand what was sung. But great song, well done.

Kind regards.

Janne, super topic and tune! Love the harmonic progression and the cool percussion (with a wood block?). Very skillful use of synth vocals as well as a very nice overall vocal arrangement. Loved the leisurely instrumental ending. Fewer enjoying the silence these days for sure, but I loved the intelligence of musicality of this lovely song. smile

Gentle, relaxing, chilling - I like your song.
I'm lucky, I live near the forest and walk my dog every day to enjoy the sounds of nature.
The only disturbing noise might be me working out melodies for my songs.
So, if you ever see someone a cappella-ing in the woods, that's me smile

Yet another innovative, contemplative effort from an uber-creative talent. I loved hooters of the hurry, holy evergreen, satori. Also eco-fascism. (Didn't know that was a thing until I looked it up!) Message was great and well-received by these ears. Melodic flow was slightly askew in a few places, but that may be the subject matter and language barrier. (Probably perfect in Finnish.) Bridge to outro was cool. Overall, another fascinating bit of music from an artist who lives outside the box.

Janne,

This is so contemplative and relaxing. Serenity at its best.

Your music is always interesting and often thought-provoking. I'm never sure when i click on to one of your songs for the first time, but I always know it's going to hold my attention. You are very creative. One thing that impresses me is your finite command of the English language for a non-native speaker.

Very nice, indeed!

Thanks Herb, I appreciate your kind feedback smile I'm really glad to hear how you enjoy the silence, too. "Soothing sounds of nature", yes, that's what we all yearn for.

Thanks Marty for your heartwarming comment smile I liked especially "a masterpiece" smile Actually, AI suggested word "crowd" when I was pondering what word would be paradoxical, like in a question "What is the sound of one hand clapping?", and human related. I wasn't fully satisfied with it, but it was definitely better than my original word ("brawl").

Hi Janne.

This is very, very well done. You have really excelled with this song. Your creation is amazing and your use of Synth V is fantastic. To me, your chorus is a standout.

I found myself pondering that last line over and over. The way that you have set up the word "silence" to be called "the holy evergreen" is very clever writing. I have never used this technique but I am great admirer of it now that I've seen it. If ever you see something similar in my lyrics some time in the future (assuming I'll post more songs), you will know that the technique came from you smile

All the best,

Nicely done, Janne, very original and fresh sounding. Cool melody, love the feel. The long outro really works well.

Enjoyed the video too! What software did you use to produce that if you don't mind my asking?

Janne,

Cool concept for a song, and you do it justice in both the write and production. Engaging and contemplative. Excellent work here, Janne . . .. but then you’re productions are always top notch. Lovely harmonies to boot.

Hi, Janne.

Nice! The vocal melody and backing do a great job matching the ideas in the song.

Lovely bit at the end.

I had to laugh at the line "hooters in a hurry", since Hooters is a well-known American restaurant. I have great respect for those writing songs in non-native languages!
