The stereo "MIX" that comes with the stems has stereo room, overheads and toms blended in but the actual "stems" aren't stereo.

Yes, that would seem to be the case but when the "raw" mic feeds appear as mono, for what is normally a stereo pair (AND indeed is stereo at source), panning becomes a problem. How does one pan for crash & ride and keep the snare's place etc. from a mono file?
Added to this the reality that the WMA files in the DRUMS folder actually play in stereo but turn up in track view as mono and imported into a DAW as mono the intent, I suggest, isn't being achieved.
