forgive my ignorance but i think its possible - i just don't know how. i have a piano sheet music version of a nightingale sang in berekely square. is trhere a program that will scan it and produce a midi piano track? as a non-keyboard player i have been producing BIAB tracks for years but this time i realy need the piano part for this song.

I have had some success doing this with Musescore with its web-based import service, accessible via the "File" menu's "Import PDF" option for scanning sheet music (pdf). Better the quality of the scan the better the chances. Or I have had good success with extracting the piano audio stem with SMP and then using that app to convert the piano to midi to be opened in Musecore. This web based options may require Pro Membership. Send me a link to the sheetmusic and I will see what Musescore can do.

I just checked and it appears the service is avialable free with an account.

Using MuseScore's Web-Based Import
Open: MuseScore 4 on your computer.
Go to File > Import PDF.
You will be redirected to the MuseScore.com import page.
Log in or create a free account: if prompted.
Upload: your PDF file to the site.
Wait for the conversion: to complete.
Download: the converted file.
Open: the downloaded file in MuseScore 4.

Yes, to convert you have to upload. You should upload to your private account and Mark it as PRIVATE so it will not be visable to anyone else.

Score Uploading Guidelines
About these guidelines
These guidelines help ensure that your scores are:
Properly titled and attributed.
Easy for others to find and enjoy.
Compliant with MuseScore's community guidelines.

These are not mandatory but are highly recommended to improve score visibility, accessibility, and searchability. Fact is you can ignor all this if you just want to covert a pdf to a .msi.

When you are done you will get this!

After opening the result in MuseScore and editing so that it is perfect, then you can export as MIDI which, again, might not be perfect.

I own a number of scanning/conversion apps. Are any of them really good? Not in my experience. Heaven help you if the original score contains marks unsupported by MusicXML 3.0 including those damned dotted slurs.

I generally find that re-entering from scratch is faster than scanning and converted. The human brain is much smarter than any of these apps.

Yes, it depends, and you generally need to do some editing to fix it, either in the scanner or what I do, in my preferred notation program.

I generally use Scan Score Pro for most projects. The version that only supports a few staves (4, perhaps) is very reasonably priced.

success but only partly. its a four page pdf and only two pages were processed. the midi sounded quite good but i'd like all of it! any suggestions?
i suppose i could upload individual pages and cut and paste but that is a bit tedious

Thanks for the pdf.

I can confirm your findings. The conversion with Muscore was almost useless for me, except for the fact that it allowed me to play/hear the tune, which I recognized. But It only converted two of the four pages. The sounds and notation from these pages was actually pretty good. But why it did not do all four pages is unknown. I suspect the quality of the pdf. Although very legible to the eye, perhaps the shading/contrast was bad. I actually tried to edit the pages to crop and brighten, but when I submitted that version it sent it back to me saying this version did not work at all.

But now that I know the song, there is new option. If you go to Muscore library you will find 77 versions of "A nightingale sang in berkelye square" available for piano and download in pdf, midi, or mscz. I quickly found one which looks like a good match based upon a visual read. I will send it to you midi and mscz via PM in a bit. Do you have access to this library?

To just download them, one must have a MuseScore Pro Subscription. I pay $39.99 annually for mine, MuseScore Pro+.

+1
I worked professionally 20+ years in the world of character recognition and text search. Long before AI when Google was just starting to figure things out. The overwhelming cost (by a long shot) in any conversion effort was the cost of cleanup. Correcting mistakes made by the recognition engines(s). We used multiple recognition engines in a variety of approaches. At first we thought was that 90-95% was "good enough". It was not. 98-99% was minimum tolerable. With music I would imagine you need to be out .9995 or so to be happy.

Cleaning up a mess is pretty annoying work.
