I was really impressed with the interpretation, and it was fun to listen to.

Horns made it for me .. and the drum/bass groove

discuss ..

I know right?
We used to do a funk version of Walk This Way, but this one surprised/impressed me.
What a great rendition (in my eyes anyway)

I might have mixed the bari-sax a little more upfront <grin>

AI or not, I liked it! Maybe that's a good direction for AI...re-interpreting classic tunes. I'd give it a listen.

Love those horns too!

That was extremely impressive. I think it sounded like Tower of Power backing James Brown.
Maybe AI Funk is here to stay?

The "brilliance" of this is the Original underlying song and arrangement.
Which was created by 4 young human beings.

This is pretty much an exact copy of that with instrument swaps.
A cover assembled by bots. Nothing original about that.
The Future of Music?
Sad.

YouTube is already being flooded with videos that are 2-hours of 4 minute songs - AI Fake Music generated In The Style Of the artist or song you are looking for. They are Slick. They all sound the same.

You would think the folks of this forum would hesitate to promote and celebrate the technology that will likely end this forum. A whole lot faster than anyone has even considered, would be my guess.
That what's really sad.

It would be great if BIAB could actually incorporate AI to improve what it already does - provide professional level tracks with which you can create professional productions. It's already amazing - that could make it even more so. If possible. Seems like that might take more resources than would be available. But maybe AI can be harnessed to help write that code.

That elephant in the room, that no one seems to see, will squash it all once he finally sits down.
He's beginning to squat.

No matter what people want to say about AI, it's not going away. Just like the folks who made wagon wheels and buggy whips likely talked massive s**t about the newfangled "horseless carriage" saying it would never catch on with the people....change is inevitable, unrelenting, and bound to change a lot of things we hold on to with fervor. AI is doing the same thing in every aspect of life. There's no way to put it back in the bottle now. Use it or not, talk bad about it or not.... it's changing how we create music. Even our beloved Band in A Box has added several facets of it's ability to the menus here. No doubt, they are using it for writing code in the new versions yet to be released. They'd be foolish not to use it. Expect more AI assistance in the "Box" in the future releases.

As to the video.... that was really cool but nothing that some talented musicians could not have recreated themselves in a studio with some work and rehearsal time and the talent to play those parts. AI probably did the entire thing in under 30 seconds with a well written prompt. I've always thought that AI was programmed to avoid covers like this. At least that's been my experience when I ask it to help with a song in the style of some particular artist or band, it comes back and tells me that's not allowed. Copyright and other such things.

My biggest nit with AI is how easily fooled most people are. Especially when it comes to music and art.

There are at least a dozen versions of this out there. It was easy to listen to for about 30 seconds—cute, clever, move on… Just as easy to dismiss every other time it has appeared in my feeds. Doing bluegrass versions of Led Zep tunes with my friends 40 years ago was more fun, frankly.

Everyone knows AI cannot be stopped. No one is arguing that. Stating the obvious, again.
People who cannot write a good song will rejoice.
People who don't have the imagination or skill to create an interesting production and arrangement will be gobbling it up.
Good for them. Mom will be impressed.

It is taking over everything.

I think, we, in this forum, ought to be showing that there is still a way to make good original music.
(and not continuing to post "Isn't AI Cool" videos)

Let's continue to show people why it's cool to buy Band-In-A-Box.

Frankly, I'm puzzled. What are you really trying to say? I'm missing your point apparently.

Yeah, I get it. I'm not pushing the AI side at all, believe me.
As I said, I just thought it was a cool rendition, I liked it and thought others here might enjoy that type of sound.
It kinda made me want to write some funk TBH .. not thru AI, but ya know, having a band actually play it.
We try to have fun like that here; it ain't a business to us much anymore.

The Subject line was meant to be read in an 'eeyore' kind of tone ..

Thanks mr jane for both responses. I could not agree more. Somewhat parenthetically many of the Spotify curators who feature our songs are making definitive no AI wanted statements. Yes it begs the question of how would they determine such. I sense no technical reason AI music companies could not be required to digitally stamp productions in the manner that streaming platforms could use algorithms to detect them. But what the heck does this old and ole skool guy know? Not much other than I’m happy to live in my streaming bubble that allows me to listen to music I love.

Bud

PS I mean zero disrespect to those for whom synth vocals have allowed them to continue making fine productions of their music.

There is a difference between using AI to write the song completely (lyrics and melody) and using it in the same way one would collaborate with another writer working from each other's input to the lyrics and melody in the writing process. When you collaborate with someone, it's not your idea necessarily that gets used or is the best, but it's acceptable to do that. And then sometimes what you come up with is in fact the best part of the collab. But that's a discussion for another day.

Using AI or synth vocals to me is not any different from using a synth to play a nice piano sample or strings in a song or a drum program to play the drums in a song or using BB to do the tracks. In another forum many years ago, my use of BB tracks in my songs was considered to be "cheating" and considered by quite a few folks there to be beneath a "real musician".

Conversations of this nature beg the question of what is AI. Every photo/video editor I’ve used for the last decade now calls itself AI even though functionally it has not changed. Oh, and my mother left GA during WWII when she was 18 to be an IBM “key punch girl.” AI? 🤪

FWIW I do think scripting a synth vocal with melody and human nuances is a long ways from Suno.

Bud

PS Off topic, forgive me, I retired with nearly 40 years in the mental health field. I will definitively state that in this area, AI generated articles, chats, search summaries, etc., are often ludicrous - and that makes them dangerous.

That makes sense by those 'curators'; AI learns by scraping human created content, most of the time with no credit given. That's an issue that is going to be in the courts more and more.

In the example I posted, the guy's YT channel does AI covers as it's focus and and somehow he gets away with it.
Using Parody as his out, like Weird Al? Or just getting away with it, or maybe he actually licenses it .. then again, wherever he is may have different copyright laws altogether.

All I'm saying is if I walked into a show/club and heard this I'd probably order a pitcher instead of a bottle <grin>
I thought of the AI side as a side note so I mentioned it (for transparency as they say)

Regardless, I like that kind of tight funk/groove stuff
I wish more people did, might be easier to find then

Maybe it's due for a comeback. What's old eventually becomes new again. smile

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe

This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
