Soundcloud: Painting on a wall
YouTube: Painting on a wall This song is in response to two songwriting challenges (set by Knee Wobbler): the first: to write a ballad; the second: to write about an inanimate object. I succeeded with the second, but not the first, as I don’t consider this a ballad. On this recording, finger-picking and strings are provided by Band-In-A-Box while other guitars, 'foot tapping' and vocals are provided by me. I tried to learn Travis picking to record this song, and while I am someway towards my goal, I will release my full version in due course once I can use it more fluently. In the meantime, I’ll refer to this as the ‘BIAB mix’. The idea for the song came to me while doing the dishes one day, which is a pleasant change from the bathroom. The idea came along with the line ‘I am a painting on a wall. Nothing escapes me, I see it all.’ From there, the concept of the painting on the wall seeing the things going on in the family home, and particularly the life story of the only child daughter of a couple. The lyrics are fiction and not based on my experience. When my own children were approaching adulthood, I had a realisation of how good it would be that our grown up and departed children would want to visit their parents just because they wanted to. I relayed this to my late mother-in-law and she replied “Andrew, you don’t know what it would mean to your parents if you visited them more often.” It took me by surprise that I wanted something of my children that I was not providing to my own parents. Video notes: I realise the main characters change their looks slightly in the video. I've tried to keep them as consistent as I could while relying on stock video footage. I rationalise this by thinking that women change hair colour regularly, and the father is obviously wearing a hairpiece in some scenes. The painting on a wall is an AI (Copilot) rendered oil painting of a picture of me I took with my webcam. I asked Copilot to replace my daggy polo top with a suit and tie, which it obliged. ****** SONG SUMMARY ************* Key=F , Tempo 80, Length (m:s)=4:57 28 bar intro, 68 bar chorus, from bar 29 to bar 96. I really love this song Andrew for its storytelling. And it’s a change of style as well, keeping it simple with clean acoustic tones, just adds to the reflective lyrics that spans a lifetime. The strings were really subtle, and work well. I’m looking forward to the Finger Licking Good version as I think that will also add to the overall production. I thought perhaps the picture had been done by your talented daughter, alas AI again! It is a rather stern looking you, worthy of being hung in the halls of the Australian Parliament.
Really excellent song, one of your best.
PS I was going to say no diminished or augmented chords were harmed in this song, but I realised there was an A aug. You do so like being augmentative!

Hi, Andrew. When I first misread the title, I thought this song might be about painting a wall. I'm so glad to be wrong about that.  Really good write - you go right for the heart with this, and it works. There's nothing that motivates learning a new skill so much as being able to immediately use it. Vocals – doubled, and no pitch correction – can’t you tell? I manually aligned the second track to the main vocal using stretch markers in Reaper - boy, was that hard work! Yeah, but it's easier than slicing the track, and then dragging the slice point to align the vocal. I once got to do that with a bunch of recording of my old choir, trying my best to align multiple takes of live playing. Ha! Now that was fun. As for pitch correction... I've got some songs that have no pitch correction on them that have some painfully out-of-tune moments, but I think it stands up better than some of the overly pitch corrected stuff I've done. So you made the right call there, because raw, imperfect vocals have a power that processed ones don't. You finally came back home, but your Mum and Dad have gone

The strings were really subtle, and work well. Thanks Lee. This is one of my most non-metaphoric lyrics yet. I normally like to have some ambiguity about the lyrics, and sometimes take the view that ‘the words are just the vehicle for the music’. Not so in this one. I avoided vocal harmony on it because who in this story would be accompanying the painting? It’s a first person narrative. So you are right - a less cluttered arranged was required. Accidentally, the strings go a bit dark in the second half of the bridge and that matches the illness and dementia lyric - that was a fluke. I’m looking forward to the Finger Licking Good version as I think that will also add to the overall production. Yes, it’s coming along and I will release a version at some point in the future with my own finger-picking on it. In the meantime, the BIAB RealTrack served the song well and supported a post to this forum. I thought perhaps the picture had been done by your talented daughter, alas AI again! It is a rather stern looking you, worthy of being hung in the halls of the Australian Parliament. I am happy with the painting - it would’ve been creepy to have a smile. The unanswered question is - what is this picture doing hanging in the house? Am I an uncle or some long gone patriarch? I don’t know. If it was hanging in the halls of Parliament, it would have a voice bubble saying “What the hell are you doing approving the opening and extension of more gas fields?” PS I was going to say no diminished or augmented chords were harmed in this song, but I realised there was an A aug. You do so like being augmentative! You know I love augmented and diminished chords - they open up many options, but I usually use them for a ‘tension and release’ moment in a song. Just for clarity, the finger picking is a BIAB RealTrack - my finger-picking skills are too primitive just yet, but I’m working on it. … So you made the right call there, because raw, imperfect vocals have a power that processed ones don't. ‘Raw and imperfect’ are my middle names! I have a cringe moment when I sing ‘proud’ on a high note. … The twist of the knife. Perfect. Yes, I loved the idea of the painting having empathy but not being able to demonstrate it. Hmmm. I have to thank you for your encouragement a couple of my threads ago about prosody. I have to admit I had to look it up and watch a couple of YouTube videos … it came at the right time for me because I became increasingly aware of - being a melody before lyric writer - that I would sometimes have the emPHAsis on the wrong sylLAble, and also of the relationship between the music and the lyrics. I’ve become more conscious to create a lyric and melody that sounds as one would speak it. Conscious but imperfect delivery. I hope I am getting better at it. One example in this song is in verse 6 ‘run down your face’ - the equivalent melody in other verses is ascending, but in verse 6 I made it descending to mirror the words. However, this song is abnormal for me because I prefer to write in metaphor and ambiguity - the words are the vehicle for the music - but maybe that’s me being lazy, or in pursuit of enigma. Funny story (to me)...When I was trying to learn the guitar 50+ years ago, my sources were Fred Noad's "The (Classical) Guitar Songbook", a "Play Like Chet Atkins" 33 RPM album/booklet and a Travis picking instructional. For understandable reasons, I got REAL good at fingerstyle guitar, using my thumb to trace the bass lines and chord melody, BUT...I couldn't use a pick at all. So my journey is the opposite of yours. Now I use a pick almost exclusively. But it's like riding a bicycle with the other stuff. Well worth the effort.
Anyway...aces tune!

My early twenties were influenced by Simon and Garfunkel and Paul Simon solo and always loved Simon’s finger-picking … The Boxer, Peace Like a River etc. … unfortunately by then, I had plateaued in my playing reaching a fairly competent acoustic strum level and not pushing myself to learn lead and finger-picking. How I wish I had taken the opportunity earlier in life. But … it’s never too late, and while my fingers aren’t as nimble, I have time on my hands - so to speak. Life-long learning! Mentally, if I am vulnerable and mention it first up, listeners might be more forgiving. I should be more content because I can carry a tune as long as I stay within my 1 and 1/8th octave range. I am also growing to appreciate that many forum members love hearing the human voice, while others wish they could sing better. Moral of the story: I should go with what I’ve got. This song is abnormal for me in that the idea of the lyrics flowed naturally and I was conscious of the tweaks required to help it fit the music and vice versa. I also had to let the music (I.e. the melody and harmony/chord progression) take a back seat to support the story. The lyrics have primacy. I’ve mentioned it in several other threads that my motivation is mostly the music - the lyrics are the vehicle for the music I.e. music has primacy - otherwise go write poetry. Of course, I say this as an extreme POV only to illustrate my motivation. In truth, my songwriting exists on a spectrum, with lyrical emphasis on one end and musical emphasis on the other. Despite the lyrical focus, I did sneak in some musically appealing sections - to me anyway. I like my acoustic lead phrases in chorus 2, 3 and 4, and also that I used Aaug, Am and Amajor in the chorus - not necessarily in sequence. Andrew

Loved your vocal and really loved those lyrics. A fantastic story set to music that I am sure many can relate.
The backing band was perfect.
The mix was outstanding. IMHO this is your best to date.

Andrew, my fingerpicking is NOT posted to date, as I tend to focus on BiaB instruments and the very occasional fill/lead guitar parts. But you've got me thinking, so...who knows?? I was a HUGE fan of Paul Simon's guitar work from the very start. "The Boxer" is a great piece to start with for sure. "American Tune" was another of my early learns, and still haunts me today. Well worth the time to learn. James Taylor was another early fingerstyle influence, if just for "Fire and Rain". Simple but effective techniques that serve SO many song styles. Good luck!!

You have a very engaging talent for writing songs, Andrew. Always a good feeling with a catchy melody singing catchy lyrics. Chord structure always has some cool turns and you always keep the listener listening with the dynamics you use.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
