A folk song from Finland. Translation of lyrics are below.

In my version I sing and play mandolins, banjo and guitar.
I produced this at my home with Band in a Box and Reaper.

Translation (EB 2025):

Hackberry is on the edge of the stream (Finnish folk song)

:,:Hackberry is on the edge of the stream,
at whose foot I cried.:,:
:,:To foreign lands my sweetheart went
and left me here alone.:,:

:,:That I have said,
that I will never love a richman.:,:
:,:The richmen are not lovable,
and I have no money to buy love.:,:

Hi Arri!
A song of two halves - and I loved it when the drums entered and then finished off with the electric guitar. It almost felt like some bagpipes were going to play as well, but I guess that would be a departure from a Finnish folk song?
Well done!

Hi Arri,

You, my friend, are a musical magician! Taking an old Finnish folk song and making it sound fresh and new? That's harder than than finding a reindeer in a snowstorm!

Your voice, Arri, is totally fantastic. It's got this warm, earthy sound – like a cozy fireplace on a cold night that just pulls you in. It feels so real and honest; no faking it here, which is brilliant!

Then there's your amazing talent with instruments. Mandolins, banjo, guitar – you're like a one-person folk orchestra! The mandolin shines, the banjo gives it that earthy feel, and the guitar holds it all together like a strong tree. And even with a little help from your computer friends (Band-in-a-Box and Reaper), it all sounds wonderfully full and alive.

For a home studio, your sound mix is cleaner than a freshly-swept mökki floor. It sounds like you've invited us right into the music! Okay, sure, the digital drums and some synths are a tiny bit digital, but honestly, it’s like complaining about a single snowflake when you're in an amazing winter wonderland. It's a tiny detail in a big, beautiful song.

The words in your song are really powerful. "Hackberry is by the stream, where I cried" paints such a vivid picture of heartbreak in nature. And then you throw in some deeper thoughts about not being able to buy true feelings – it's personal, but it also makes us think about bigger things. Smart stuff!

Arri, you're not just a musician; you're a Finnish cultural ambassador with a banjo! Your music is a fantastic peek into Finnish life. I'm totally hooked and ready for my next "lesson" from Professor Arri.

Keep the brilliant music coming!

Regards,

Izzy.

Hi, Arri. Another wonderful gem of yours. It is truly magical how you bring the old into the new with a revitalized thrills. Excllent playing (as always). Thanks for the translation, but Finnish is fine with me. I don't understand the words, but I get the meaning --the feeling. t's really really cool how you fashion these old classics with BiaB. Always so well done.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Esa,

This is really nice music. It's so nice to hear traditional music from other cultures. Nicely mixed and produced.

Hey, I'm 2% Finnish! My Finnish lineage is from Vantaa, near Helsinki.

Again, a very nice song and fun to listen to.

Thanks Alan. It's nice, that I hit that 2 % Finnish in you! I also have found, that my versions of Finnish songs are much played also in Vietnam, Malesia, Indonesia and also in the Arabic countries. There must be some globally touching in this Finnish melodic and melancholic music. I even had a duo called DoubleMinor, because most of the Finnish songs are in minor. DoubleMinor has also another meaning: in icehockey, which is very Finnish sport, it means penalty of two times two minutes or double minor penalty.

Hi Esa,

What a beautiful song! The lyrics are sweet, but also sad, and that has to be in that (Finnish) minor key!
Nice to read/hear that you play all the string instruments yourself.

Do you also make songs of your own? I bet you do and I'm curious to hear an example one of these days
Enjoyed this song very much,

Hans

Hi, Arri.

As usual, solid playing all around. The drums really work, and you step up the vocal at that point, too!

I love that low whistle (yes, I know it's MIDI), and the electric guitar was a pleasant surprise.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Beautiful instrumentation in this Arri. So glad that there's such a variation of music on this forum. Your skill with stringed instruments is also admirable. Love that electric guitar end.

That's one of the cool things about this community. We have such a wide and diverse group of musicians here. Hearing music from the ends of the earth is so rewarding.

Thanks for posting this. I liked it

Esa, I always enjoy your contributions! This is a lovely tune, with a Celtic flavor...as the drums kicked in, it really sounded like an anthem, and my imagination went to a village festival where the citizens marched solemnly singing this song proudly. So, your arrangement has the ability to generate sound pictures--at least for me. This was a wonderful morning listening gift to me!

Arri, this is fantastic. Great playing and singing. Your arrangement is excellent. Loved how you picked things up when the drums came in. Great mix. You probably don't know this but you are educating me on various styles and folk songs that I would never had heard if it wasn't for you. Thanx so much for that.
IMHO this is your best to date.

I arrived early to a restaurant.
The manager asks, "do you mind waiting a bit?"
I said no.
"Good", he said. "Take these drinks to table 3"

Thanks. It's great to have a forum, where colleagues making music themselves can contribute with useful suggestions and encourage with appreciation based on their own experiences how hardship and toil can music making be and how fruitful, when it works.

You enjoy the treasures of Finnish folk lore as much as we enjoy 100+ year old blues.
It's a lot of fun exploring those old gems for sure.
You instrumental performances, vocals and production certainly did it justice.

Enjoyed it!
