Just Downstream On That River on Soundcloud
Just Downstream On That River on YouTube

A song about a ride to the inside of your stream of consciousness. Nah, make up your own meaning.

Style is _STACK+.STY (Stack Memphis Blues)

RealTracks in style: 1152:Silence
RealTracks in style: 4071:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm MemphisSlowBluesPat Ev 085
RealTracks in song: ~1652:Organ, RhythmNoBass Bossa Ev 085
RealTracks in song: 1761:Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Pop16ths Ev16 085
EZDDrummer.

Dave Bell (Blue Attitude), with his usual lift to the song, played guitar. I sang and played bass.

Just Downstream On That River

Just downstream on that river that takes you deep inside
there's a strange looking creature looking back
that makes you wanna hide.
If you look into its eyes, you will see it.
A glow that makes you wanna know.
Once you learn you could be it that river in you flows.

Turn your back on "what matters." That river's got your six.
The creature climbs onboard uninvited. So add it to your mix.
It will make the rapids calm as your rudder,
and guide you out to see.
Just downstream on that river is where you want to be.

Just downstream on that river that takes you deep inside
there's that creature smiling back –a familiar face,
the one you call your guide.
When you look into its eyes, you still see it.
A glow that makes you feel you know.
Once you learned you could be it that river overflows...with gold.*

Marty,

Some great funky rock n blues...

Great, great vocal by you and fabulous guitar by Dave. Production is top notch.

"Turn your back on "what matters." That river's got your six.
The creature climbs onboard uninvited. So add it to your mix."

I really love the lyrics on this one - excellent stuff!

These are some of the best lyrics that have emerged from the mind of Marty. Love Dave's guitar, but that's nothing new. TB Player is grooving. Just a cool, cool sound overall.

"...Add it to your mix!". Well, I'm adding this to mine. Super tune, slinky BiaB backing, smokin' guitar, pendulous bass, and fantastic vocals. What'd I miss? Hmmm...that about covers it. Love how you just continue to spin these l'il gems off like they're nuthin'. Great music and great use of BiaB. smile

Man that song kind of tripped me out.

I got so far upstream I went into an orange tangerine psychedelic dream then I turned around and started floating on a moonbeam and floated off to Aberdeen where I met Jack Kerouac in a knapsack talking smack with the wild haired pony girl tilt-a-whirl wrapped in pearls like all the girls and they caught a bus with the rest of us so we floated off to another galaxy on a giant cloud of pixie dust.

Thanks for the trip man.

I hope I can come down.

See you at Woodstock.

Thank you, Bob. It's always good when Dave joins. He's the real rudder in this ride. Glad you got the obscure meaning.

Hi, Marty.

Nice!

Dave plays some great blues lead, and your vocals good as ever.

Like the drums, the bass does its job of supporting in the background.

It feels a bit short, which is (IMHO) perfect - leave 'em wanting more, instead of wanting you to leave. wink

I probably only get half of what you're singing about, but what I (think I) get is cool.
As always, really good vocals, fantastic guitar noodling, a good rhythm section, and your bass wanders down some really cool paths.

This is one of my favourites of yours, Marty, It's a very, very cool song in all respects, plus Dave's guitar is magic throughout. I was hooked from the very opening. Excellent stuff!

Marty

As I listen to "Just Downstream On That River" I am carried on a delightful and introspective journey.
This isn't just a song, it's an all-expenses-paid, one-way trip to my subconscious. I won't even bother to pack a toothbrush. Nosiree.

It is deeply rooted in the blues traditions of Memphis and offers a wonderfully smooth and laid-back vibe.

The instrumentation is a masterclass in elegant layering. Each instrument knows its place, politely nudging the others rather than elbowing for attention.

Dave Bell|'s guitar is the mischievous imp in this sonic ecosystem, providing those melodic lifts that make the song “jump” while still maintaining its laid-back vibe. 🎸🆗

Marty's vocals and bass create a warm foundation, the bassline is steady and rock solid. I'm convinced it's secretly holding up my entire emotional stability right now. 🧐

The Bossa Organ and Acoustic Pop16ths guitar provide subtle, rich textures, and EZDDrummer keeps the groove with a natural, unobtrusive feel.

Marty has invited me (the listener) on a fascinating "ride to the inside of your stream of consciousness." The strange looking creature that evolves into a familiar face, the inner river that overflows with gold, and the words that you must find yourself and listen to your inner voice.
The "make up your own meaning" clause is a genius move – It's like a musical Rorschach test (inkblob), but with far better background music. 😜

Overall, Just Downstream On That River is a charming, well-produced, and deeply resonant song.
It is a feeling of being hugged by the sounds, which leaves you calm and thoughtful, and smiling. 😊 ✔ 👋👌👍

Another entertaining gem from Marty. 🤩 Now, if you'll excuse me, my stream of consciousness is requesting a refill.

Regards (and a slightly more enlightened), 🙄

Izzy

Thanks, Ron. Yeah, those BiaB really know how to slink when we ask them too. I know you're a New Orleans guy, so it's good to see you liked this one.

Clever lyrics, I'm still hesitating to look into the creature's eyes, but your song makes me feel more comfortable with the idea smile
Great band, simple but how nicely instruments work together, like the rowing rhythm guitar and the guiding organ.
Enjoyed the vocals that truly experience the glow of the faces and eyes in your deep inside.
The super talented Dave and world class bass player create a safe boat ride even in those scary rapids.

Really liked the personification of the "river guide." Great song concept in general. Singing very good as usual, love the character in your voice. Dave's guitar, great as always. In my dreams that will never happen, if a major label ever wanted to produce an album of my songs, I'd tell them there's this guy in Ontario you need to fly in for the guitar parts. Bossa organ was an interesting choice, but it wasn't prominent in the mix. Another good 'un, Marty!

Hi Marty and Dave,
Really great song.
Marty, once again you've got the vocals and bass totally under control.
I especially like Dave's fantastic guitar solo. It's great that Dave was given so much time for it.
He makes perfect use of it.
Top song!

That’s a cool introspective lyric and this line grabbed us:
“Once you learn you could be it that river in you flows.”

Dave’s lead and his fills too are excellent. Very supportive.

Your fine vocal carries us happily on this journey down the river.

As always your bass and open/dynamic mix nailed the vibe.
Nice little kick off with the drums too.

We enjoyed our trip!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
