Although, BIAB does not have a setting for creating a gradual slow down in tempo (ritardando), it is possible to do this in Realband.

To achieve this, open your BIAB SGU/MGU file in Realband and then do the following...

1) Select the range of bars over which you want the tempo to slow down. (#1 on the image below)
Having "snap to grid" on makes selecting easier.

2) Click on the Tempo Map icon (#2).

3) Click on "Fill" (#3)

4) Set your start and end tempos (#4).

5) The range of bars (#5, #6) can be changed to whatever you want. If you selected a range of bars in step 1, though, these values will be automatically populated.

When the tempo map is created, it will look similar to the below image.

That's a very clear workaround for creating a ritardando in RealBand—thanks for sharing the step-by-step guide! Just to clarify, does the "Fill" function generate a smooth, linear tempo transition between the start and end points, or does it apply a fixed tempo change at each bar within the selected range?

if you study the tempo map, the ritardendo in RealBand transitions smoothly throughout each bar, i.e. progressively.
(BIAB does not currently do this).

Hi Sam,

To add to Audiotrack's comment...

The key to understanding what Realband does is in the way bars, beats and parts of beats is notated.
The format is (bar number):(beat number):(part of beat).

For example, 3:01:096 refers to bar 3, beat 1 and 96 ticks into beat 1. There are 120 ticks per beat.
Also, the right hand column on the list in my original post, shows the tempo. It's possible to see it decreasing by 1 beat per minute with each entry. That is, it starts are 110 beats per minute (bpm), then goes to 109 bpm, then to 108 bpm, etc.

I hope this helps.

Possibly related question: in BIAB, it’s possible to increase the resolution of ticks per beat. Is that also possible in RealBand?

Hello,

Under Options | Resolution, you can change the resolution and the program will convert the song to the new resolution.

Thank you,
Catherine

Up to 3840 (per beat)
Absolute benefit for both MIDI AND Audio edits.

FWIW the Fill feature can be helpful in other situations as well, such as Volume (Controller 7).

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
