An awesomely evocative song both lyrically and vocally. I relate to both the vibe and the words as my father's side of the family are Romanian and the only times I visited them were when it was still communist, the first time was when I was 12 (if memory serves) and I was there for 3 months, My family were from small towns and villages so I know what life was like in that era. Communist bloc countries were refereed to as 2nd world, but they were really 3rd world. I've not been back since the revolution as the older generation passed on while nearly all younger others emigrated, either to Germany or the US. Also, one of my favourite Neil Young songs is "After Berlin" from his videoed 1982 concert "Neil Young In Berlin" - though oddly I remember it as "Berlin Live" - but although the credits stated there was a vinyl album of the same title it was never ever released. "After Berlin" was the final song of the concert and had never been played live by the whole band (and never since!). The lyrics:

Just like a young boy running down the road
I'm singing out the same old song
Can't go back the way I started from
The road goes on and on.

Won't you help me, help me
Help me, help me,
Help me, help me
Help me, help me
Take my way on home
Help me make my way on home
After Berlin

Lights are shining in the German sky
Cosmic walls between the moon and I
Don't know where I started from

So won't you take me, take me
Take me, take me
Take me, take me
Take me, take me
Just the way I am
Ah, take me, just the way I am
After Berlin

All day cruising down the corridor
Seeing things I never seen before
Tomorrow morning in old Berlin
Where they lock you out or lock you in

Won't you save me, save me
Save me, save me
Save me, save me
Save me, save me from the final day
Save me from the final day
After Berlin

Repeat 1st 2 verses
