Translation of the lyrics below.

Song is a Finnish classic composed by Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924) to a poem by Eino Leino (1878–1926)
(pic: painting by Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela from 1897).
In my version I sing and play the guitars. I produced this at my home with Band in a Box and Reaper.

Lemminkäinen's Mother (Eino Leino- translation EB 2025)

Vicious is the wind and dark is the sky,
great on the open waters is the rage of waves.
The bay is calm and clear though.
But where does my eagle roam?

Make haste home and end your flight!
Even though you ride the roads of waves,
my boy small and fragile.
The bay is calm and peaceful.

End yet hawks' races of war for once!
From whence could you find a peer,
my boy great and handsome?
The bay is calm and peaceful.

Let yet your doves in peace soar!
From thence your mother the condolences bodes,
my boy grim, guilty.
The bay is calm and peaceful.

People of you as evil slander to me -
evil may you be for others, yet good be you to me,
my boy gentle, innocent.
The bay is calm and peaceful.

Outdoors on the open waters the storms rage,
here it is warm, here it is mild.
The bay is calm and clear though.
Set your boat yet on the jetty!

Hi Arri!
Another good bit of Finnish musical culture - thanks for posting! I like how you add your own playing from your repertoire alongside the BIAB tracks. Your translated lyrics made me think about how much people’s concerns have changed over the years … contrast the themes in this song about the perils of nature (e.g. where does my eagle roam / there’s stormy weather on the bay) compared to some of today’s themes (e.g. phone addiction, addictions generally, depression, housing affordability etc.) I guess in the former, a person’s livelihood and family security was much more volatile, but maybe nothing’s changed, depending on where you are?

Production-wise, I would have preferred the bass in the centre rather than to the left, but that’s not a big issue in another good song from you. Well done.

Andrew

Another great Finnish folk song with an excellent production and although surprising I really like the pedal steel coming in at the end.

Some favourite Waoist Adages:
#1: Play on the Way.
#13: Ask not for whom the flower blooms, it blooms for you.
#58: Bring consciousness to it.
#63: On the road to effortlessness, effort must be made.
#92: Be Love Now, the rest will come on its own.

Thanks. Andy: I started to pan the bass in the middle, but then changed to pan it a little bit to left to give it more separation. In the lowest frequency ranges the position of the sound source can't be heard, but in bass guitar is also frequency ranges, which can be positioned in the sound picture. So my basic sound picture tries to imitate a real acoustic band on the stage: singer and solo players, but also the drums (because they're spread already) in the middle. Then low freq range instruments (bass, organ, cello, rhythm accordion, piano etc.) ca 25-30 % to left and right. Then the rhythm keepers (rhythm guitars, banjos etc.) ca 50 % to left and right. Then finally the backing melody instruments (mandolin, banjo, BiaB melodytracks) further on the both sides. I very often also duplicate the vocal track and pan it 15 % left and right. Finally I use also separation in the depth of the sound picture: I put delay to the backing band in reverberation about 7 ms, while the vocalist and solo players only ca 2 ms. So it's like in old fashion concert, where the band is on the back stage and the solists infront are heard first. All this placing to separate the sound sources as much as possible both in horizontal and also in depth. The nature law says, that in the same freq you hear only the loudest sound and it's masking the others. Same goes with sound pulse: the first one is masking the later ones. It's interesting to hear your comments on that placement in the sound picture.

Really like the lyrics on this and your singing conveys them well. The melody is a little stiff and sing-songy to me (if that conveys any meaning at all.) Production is great, loved the steel guitar on the outro. Another great lesson in Finnish folk music for us all!

Arri, thanx for exposing me to Finnish songs, a genre I would never had heard if it wasn't for you.
Great instrumentation and vocal.
Super mix.
One of your best for sure.

Thanks again. Next time for a change I go to the treasures of the North American music tradition, which is so interesting, because it's the melting pot of so many folk music traditions.
