8 Bars of Lonely
--------------------------------
v1
When I write I gravitate to pleasures;
There is no problem stating joy in so few measures;
But it  would really stretch my art to state
The torment in my heart
If I had to tell it all
In just one chorus brief and small..

v2
To give a singer happiness and passion
That any listner would believe--not hard to fashion;
But when it comes to heart-break,
i must choose my words with care;
To get that feeling in one line--
That's the challenge that is mine..

Chorus
8 BARS OF LONELY--
Sad song in a minor key;
I hoped this chart would describe my heart;
I'm gonna write it in C.

v3
And from the tired list of words
That paint my world in gray-tone;
I pick them brick by brick
And hope they sing of love flown.
I know the words I wrote
Will fade with the final note;
Will the crowd be brought along
When the singer sings this song?

Chorus
8 BARS OF LONELY--
Baked lyrical recipe;
I hoped this chart would reveal my heart;
Please play it in C.

8 BARS OF LONELY--
Sad song for eternity;
I hoped this chart will convey my heart;
Please sing it for me.

Hi Tano,

Beautiful, sad song! You sing it with great passion, and the saxophone fits perfectly.
One thing strikes me: your singing is a bit too loud compared to the music (or the music is a bit too soft compared to your singing ;-)
If you could adjust this, I think everything would be more cohesive (the glue).
But the song itself is very pleasant, despite the sad lyrics...

Beautiful Tom - lovely song and you sing it soooo right for the style,
love the cinematic strings!
Hans may be right that the band could come up a little in
volume for better balance - depends so much on which monitors
people are listening on, so maybe wait and see what others say??
Love the production and arrangement, great job Tom!!

Tom, a sad but outstanding song.
Fantastic backing band and arrangement
Loved the harmony.
IMHO I think that the vocal is a tad to loud: You could either lower it or raise the volume of the backing band.
The vibes and sax were icing on the cake.
A fantastic song.

Thanks everybody...this song is about the songwriter's dilemma...you only have so many notes and bars to make your case! And then you have to hand it over to someone else to hopefully communicate it adequately to the audience. I'll take a look at the vox level. Thanks for the feedback!

Tom, wonderful, wistful tune. Super harmonic movement with that long descending line. Cool fade ending, too. Really like your vocals on this one, as well as the subtle vocal FX. The SynthV BGVs sound quite nice back in the mix like you have them. Another entry for the Great American Songbook!

Lovely instrumentation in this song, Tom. You do really good with chord structures.

Tom,

You are so good at this style/genre. This is another really good one. That sax is terrtific, and sets this squarely in the late 50s era. Nice write asnd production.

I think setting the vocal a little further back in the mix would be something to consider.

Much enjoyed!

One of my favorites of yours now, I guess because I relate to the dilemma. Sorry you are still having technical issues with your vocal, I can relate to that as well. Floyd and others have suggested I drop my vocal 1 or 2 dbs so many times that now I set my vocal to what my ear thinks is good, then I decrease it automatically 1 db. Then I drop it one more, listen the next day, and if I can stand it, that's where it stays.

Hi Tom!
Really interesting harmonically - especially that downwards passage I heard in the outro. Your chorus first line and song title - that's a great hook - I wish that line featured more in the song.

I first listened without reading the lyrics, and I thought the chorus said ...
'I hoped this chart would describe my heart;
I'm gonna write it in C and see'
It works either way!

That is a fine production.
We have no issues with upfront vocals.
Perhaps because we so often do the same. smile
You and the BGV's sound fine.

Cool write and the chorus lyric changes were excellent.
Outstanding hook also.

Nice band and that sax solo was a great choice.

We enjoyed it!

Hi, Tom.

I love the write - you know your audience. smile

It's clever, but not so much that it gets in the way of its heart.

Well sung and arranged, too.

8 BARS OF LONELY--
Sad song in a minor key;
I hoped this chart would describe my heart;
I'm gonna write it in C.

That's C minor, right? wink

Thanks David…well, the obvious “minor” didn’t make it into the Final Cut!!

Reading the title I thought you might be taking us to your favorite 8 bars to drink down lonliness. BUT, you crafted a beautiful piece about music-making, and did a fantastic job of it. Very clever lyrics --relatable by us here, for sure. Excellent vocal and mix. As always you gave it all a terrific progression.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hey Tom,

This is great man.

This sounds like something straight off some Broadway or off Broadway musical.

It totally has that somewhat nostalgic and old school feel that will never ever go out of fashion.

You should do as many of these as you can.

Super enjoyable music.

Fun to listen to and completely paints a picture in your head.
