Was She the One

This one is about a love story interrupted by advancing age and failing memory. Know this is not a happy song, and the topic is horrifically relatable to many. So fully understand if you skip it. The topic is relatable to us as well. I do find a poignant beauty in the lyrics as the narrator sorts through the confusion, the clouds of misremembrances and occasional moments of clarity...

THANKS in advance if you care to listen and comment.

R.W. Davis: Lyrics

AI: Not used. Don't get me wrong, AI MIGHT make this "better" for many listeners. But then it wouldn't be ours any more, would it?

I said “I miss you”
And I could tell she felt the same
I said “I want to kiss you”
As I tried to remember her name

Was she the one?
Was she the one?

Was she the one who forgot to make the bed?
Or the one who always messed-up the showerhead?
Was she the one who left me with nothing to drink?
And did she leave all those dirty dishes in the sink?

I said “I need you”
And she moved quickly to my side
I said “Did I mislead you?”
Or had she always known I had lied?

Was she the one?
Was she the one?

Was she the one who never said I looked nice?
Or took my credit card and always paid full price?
Was she the one who was too concerned with her looks?
And did she give to charity all my fav’rite books?

Was she the one?
Was she the one?

I saw her on the promenade
Looking so serene
Her hair a shade of goldenrod
With a touch of green
She said she’d just come from abroad
And hung out with the Queen
Oh!

I said “I love you”
And I knew that was how she felt
I said “I always think of you”
Or was I thinking of someone else?

Was she the one?
Was she the one?

I don’t know
I don’t know

With the main vocal so far forward I felt I was getting hit by some of the sibilant stuff.
Very cool song and well mixed...I really like the ahhs.

Hi Ron,
Cool song!
Great singing, and the background vocals are also very well done.
One thing you might want to consider is pushing the chorus a little more. In my opinion, the distorted guitar 4129 would be a good choice for this. If it's not mixed in too loudly in this song (maybe from the second chorus onwards), it should give your great song another boost.
Great work, Ron.
Andi :-)

Hi Ron!
That chorus line is ear-candy! And those BVs are delightful - add an almost contemplative feel when they arrive.

Good style choice as well - JUNIOR sounds great. Added it to my SC playlist.

Ron,

What an excellent song about something so difficult...

I love the clear mix and the great vocals. That style really works for this production.

As always, so well done!

What a fun re-entry into the forum for me! Trying to catch up a little... Bouncy, fun, interesting phrasing, curiosity-invoking...what's not to like?

You shouldn’t worry about composing on tough subject matter Ron. We all relate to different things in life’s journey and whilst we don’t all tread the same path, we can empathise and understand that your song can touch us all. Your vocal also adds to the empathy, handled in such a clear gentle tone and the harmony is sublime, really catchy.

Great job, regards

To whom it may concern, I was going to write a review but I forgot what song I just listened to grin
Actually Ron I can really relate to this song as I am forgetting a lot of things lately. Fortunately I tend to remember in a few minutes, well sometimes anyway.
A great song about a super subject. I also got a Cars vibe. Great lyrics, super vocal, and great mix.
Loved it-------I think grin grin

Hi Ron,,

Yeah - this is a good one!

I think a lot of us have been that road at least once. Although there was quite a bit going on with the various vocals, it sounds so tight and clean. And your vocal delivery carried the message pretty danged good. And the band is outstanding - excellent choice of style and use of the players.

I say this a lot, but here goes again - I always like your music. And what I like about it most is that it's always entertaining. That's what I want a song to do for me. You do it in spades.

Alan

Thanks, Ray! Sorry about the sibilance. The narrator is pretty exposed in SO many ways. Glad you liked the song!

Thank you, Andi! Great idea about the extra guitar for the 2nd half, I ALMOST did it in the original mix. But then I decided that the two plaintive guitars chugging on made their own musical statement. But I could go either way. Appreciate the listen and idea!

Thank you, Andrew! I was thinking of the narrator peering into the fog, trying to figure it out in a trance or dreamlike state, and the BGVs just seemed to pop. Funny how that happens. Yeah, that's a killer RealStyle for the stuff I do. Almost have to force myself NOT to overuse it...

Thanks, Bob! For sure I felt like I was threading the needle on this topic, and in truth I shelved it after finishing, thinking it was too painful. But I love the bittersweet portrait, sad edges and all. Glad you enjoyed it!

Excellent, for all the reasons already stated. In particular, I loved your rhyming reach to get to "goldenrod" through "promenade"--A++ And I really liked the "sharp-edged" chord structure--not sure if that's the right description--but it was an unconventional movement, and I liked that alot.

I can't help but notice that the character in your song has amazing recall of past details but can't recall HER. I thought that was pretty funny. I liked the song and vocal quite a bit. Tom already mentioned the goldenrod/promenade rhyme, but I'll second my admiration of that anyway. I really like your voice a lot. It's somewhat genre specific, but quite good for the music you make. Well done, Ron!

Well, welcome back, Beth! Like the "curiosity-invoking" comment. I've been pondering the identification of both the present "she" and the the remembered (or misremembered) "she". Are they the same, or different,? Is she a spouse? That's a strong possibility. A family member? A housecleaner? A caregiver? Or maybe a fellow resident? I made up my own backstory to underpin this musical interpretation, but the lyrics are certainly open to interpretation. Love songs like that. THANKS for stopping by!

Thanks for the supportive thoughts, Lee. I've never been accused of being overly sensitive, but I must be slipping. Ha! Glad you enjoyed the tune!

Great song, Ron ... a tough to tackle subject, indeed, yet so well handled. Well done. Your voice's intonation and delivery are excellent. The harmonic progressions are great, and, I thought, unorthodox in a very good way. I enjoyed it.

Hi Ron,

I think this might be my new favorite from you! I'm with Herb on hearing a Cars vibe, and that's ok in my book.

Love the arrangement and great job on the mix! Nice pan on the guitars, great drum sound too.

But most important, just a really well written and performed song.

Listened a couple of times, enjoyed!

Not a sad song, although it may be sadly relatable to many --or all. I remember guys when young who couldn't remember the girl's name they spent all night with. I really like the vocals. No Ai would have that shrug in their voice that you do when you say "I don't know." Right from the opening chords I was hooked, and it got even better from there. A fac, Ron. Really enjoyed it.

Enjoy whatever happens!
