As you've pointed out, though, the backing can change in volume. As you mention, this is most likely due to design. It is also seems to be affected by the type and number of instruments. Because I notate all of my songs in BIAB, I've been using MIDI melody for many years. Some instruments are better that others at cutting through the overall mix.

It occurs to me that I may be able to test with different styles and with the other tracks all turned off. I can probably even feed the audio into something that will give an actual measurement. On Linux I'd just stick a meterbridge on the outputs. Probably there's something similar for Windows, the Windows audio routing is usually pretty pathetic, I think.
