So, since I don't have the vocal range I used to, how can I record and then change the key up to the key of the original song? Also, any tips on how to get autoharmonies not to sound so "robotic" would be appreciated! Thanks - Bernie

I usually adjust the key of the song to my range rather than adjusting my vocal track. This way you can actually sing to the song in the proper key. I haven't looked at Powertracks in a while, but, what you are looking for is "pitch shifting". I'm sure there is a button somewhere to accomplish this. Keep in mind you dont want to adjust too far or you will "hear" issues.
By the way, if it is just the single high E or F that you need to hit in one part, then Melodyne is definitly the answer. Is it cheating?? Not by my definition!
Autoharmonies sounding robotic? The only thing I have seen to begin to solve this is to invest lots of $$. I think some of the newer hardware solutions get it best, but at a cost. Other than that, try to just keep it very simple and subtle, a little goes a long way.

Not as an internal plug in, but you just export the audio track and open it in Melodyne and do what you want and import it back.

Just for info - The new DNA version of melodyne works perfectly over in Reaper as a plugin, but only in its 32 bit version not the 64 bit.

Dan, please don't take this wrong, as i really mean it in a positive way. You are a very cool guy and a solid contributer here, so I do not want to be offensive in any way, BUT, This is why so many folks grow to have a level of dislike for REAPER. The users are so enthusiastic for it, that they push it like a religion.
This is a PG music forum, and it was supplied to promote PG products. If at every turn we point out that the users here would be better off with another DAW, It is not really that cool. The OP was asking for solutions for PG products, not a subtle sales pitch to move to another platform.
Look I appreciate that you love your DAW, hey we have talked about this on another thread, and i mentioned one i like as well, but i do not take every opportunity to push that one on others as a solution to any issues they have.
Anyway, i appologize in advance if i misread you, or if this offends. I don't mean to, but just felt like i needed to say something.
Respectfully Rob

I m so glad, cause i agonized after hitting enter. A real close friend says that sometimes i need to be horse whipped! I really struggle to say things in print, cause i can't hear myself prattle on!

The Melodyne Ass't demo works with PT - it just doesn't give you enough "functional" time - that is Melodyne's restriction, not PT. If I had the money I would buy Melodyne - user friendly for the most part.
Robotic voices come because the pitch generators are pulling the vocal notes to "0". The same happens when you try to pitch correction a voice to midi notes. The thing to realize is voices do not sing in perfect pitch but with some pitch drift. Of course if you are generating harmonies based on chords or midi melodies, then you will get "perfect" not human harmony - hence robotic voices. As was once suggested here - generate a TC harmony, learn to sing it then record it but with your voice. If you happen to need pitch correction then correct only to +/- 25 cents - it will sound more human.
Hope this helps. Ian

As was suggested earlier, change the key to match your vocal range. We have to do this with many of the songs that we perform, and if you are careful about whether you transpose up or down depending on the instrumentation you will find that this works well for you.
I haven't used the TC Helicon built in harmonizer feature in a long time so I don't recall for sure. But if there are settings for "humanization" you could experiment with those to see if it improves the harmonies.
Also, based on our experience, you have to do a lot of practice with any kind of vocal harmonizer in order to get the best results.
We currently use two TC Helicon VoiceLive2 hardware harmonizers in our duo, and they are able to produce some very realistic harmonies. This is not an inexpensive solution, but it does work quite well. You can sometimes find a good deal on eBay.
I should note that it took several months of working with the harmonizers before we were able to approximate some of the demos that TC Helicon does at trade shows, but the harmonies that we produce now are very realistic, and are crowd pleasers. Early on the harmonies were not that good.
I would experiment with any humanization settings that might help your harmonies sound less mechanical. The other thing is that, as far as I know, the TC Helicon software implementation that PG Music is using probably has not been updated for quite some time and I expect that TC Helicon has made significant advances as can be seen by their more recent hardware offerings.
Hope this helps, Burt

Trying to do a pitch stretch on your vocal is iffy at best. PG is known for having a very good algo for this but still you're lucky to get one step out of it like a D to an E without bad glitching.

I see that TC Helicon makes some hardware that looks pretty impressive. Anyone with experience? Thanks - Bernie
