This is driving me nuts. I work in Real Band. When I save, it takes forever, but eventually it does save. Then I get this weird error saying in effect that I can't rename the file or something. Well, I'm NOT renaming the file. I give it an original name. I get the renaming error anyway which doesn't make sense.
That's only half the problem. When I get done saving a lot of times I get told that I have to reboot because there has been some sort of error. When I do reboot I get a legacy version of my file. In other words, the work I did over the previous hour magically disappears. I am left with an old version, and all my work appears to be gone.
In looking at the files in Explorer something interesting appears. The file I am opening is relatively small, but there is a TMP file right next to it that is much larger.
Tonight for example I saved a file called "How Little_1.SEQ". That file is 82,294 K. Right next to that file is "How Little_1.TMP. That file is 186,147k. The former file was made at 8:00 PM, i.e. a long while ago. The TMP file was saved a few minutes ago, almost an HOUR after the legacy file.
So it seems that these two files are somehow linked, and I'm not getting to see all the additional work which I assume must be on the TMP file.
This is just me making a pile of assumptions. Maybe there is another explanation. Just seems weird that I am always thrown back to an old file version every time.
P.S. After I wrote the above I went back to review the save error. This is what it says. I took out some personal stuff as shown in brackets:
"Error renaming C\Users\[me]\[my cloud storage]\Music\Select Band in a Box Files\How little We Know\How Little_1.TMP to C\Users\[me]\[my cloud storage]\Music\Select Band in a Box Files\How Little We Know\How Little_1.SEQ"

My guess is the problem is that you're saving to cloud storage in real time and the cloud is locking the file because it's still saving or something from a previous save. I always do my work locally, then load to my cloud drive after the fact. OneDrive can highjack your documents folder, for example. I'd try working on a C:\BB folder or similar and see if the problem goes away.

That was my thinking too. But here’s what I tried to test the theory.
I saved a file on my local desktop. I messed around with the file as though I was editing it. I saved to the file. I got the same error.
I tried it again. This time, it worked without error.
I did it a couple more times. I got different results without rhyme or reason.
Then, I went to the preferences section and noticed there’s a field there that says “Path“. No clue why that’s even there. For reasons I can’t explain sometimes that path would show the local address (i.e. where the test file actually is). Sometimes it would choose to show the cloud address. Even though the file NEVER left the local desktop.
So there seems to be no rational connection between the place that you’re working from, whether it’s in the cloud or locally and that so-called Path field which could read anything. I have no idea why that is there, but it is very troubling to have to think about something obscure like that tucked away in a setting somewhere.
And yes, if you have the presence of mind to remember this, you can manually set the Path to wherever the file really is. But why on earth should you ever have to do that?
Thanks.
Michael

Here's my reply with suggestions:
1. I would never use the cloud like this. 2. Each song should have it's own Windows folder. For example, I have a directory called Songs in Windows. Within that directory is a dir for each song. 3. Within each song's dir is everything to do with that song and everything from BB and RB gets saved to that song dir. The same dir is also used for saving production notes and anything else related to the song. 4. I never use a music production pc on the net. I have a separate PC for that. For reasoning behind this and save me retyping. Please go to PG Tips Forum and read tips re Using an Existing PC for music production. There are many good reasons for this. 5. If I want to back up to a cloud account I would copy the song dir to the internet PC and do it from there. This sandboxes the production PC. 6. During a session I save the song seq to the songs dir and also to a second back up device..m.2 ssd which are dirt cheap these days.
In closing please could you run the following test in RB. ACTION then test audio performance then please post back results.
As a benchmark my production PC RB reports over 250 tracks.
Please note that any music app you use the saved song projects can be large depending on the number of tracks used.

my songs....mixed for good earbuds...(fyi..my vocs on all songs..) https://soundcloud.com/alfsongs(90 songs created useing bb/rb) (lots of tips of mine in pg tips forum.)
