Control changes embadded in the file?

Pick a track that 'changes' when you open the file (highlite the track)
Click on the Event List ('E' icon)
Hit rewind and look for volume controls, they should be a different color and have a Control Change number (usually 7 or 11).
Delete these (on each track), make the adjustments, save and test.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
