hello, i wish to suggest PG Music to create a lite edition band in a box for ipad. I can imagine many one-man-band keyboardist like those performing in hotels, wanting to use iPad instead of a laptop. the next version of iOS (november) will include CoreMIDI API, so that I can just plug in my usb midi keyboard to use the Ipad as sound module/arranger.

being able to compose, arrange, etc.. using band in a box with Ipad's touchscreen is definitely something I'd love to do

was never a fan of apple stuff, but this coreMIDI definitely opened my eyes. but why not laptop some may ask. 1) long battery life 2) crippled multitasking (stability is a plus for live performance) 2) light and slim

Welcome to the forum. Your information about an upcoming change in OS features is interesting.

There is a Wishlist forum here, where this post probably should be. You will see other posts about this and similar suggestions, so you're not alone.

Hi Nick and welcome. There was quite a discussion about this earlier this year and the consensus seemed to be it's not just the OS with the Ipad but the CPU. It's too weak to handle Biab especially the Real Tracks which is the main reason folks are using Biab now. Rendering RT's takes a lot of processing power. As it is even with a powerful modern home PC it takes too long to generate a 5 part RT song for live work so I don't think a Ipad could do it. For live work people render the song first, then freeze the tracks ahead of time for quick playback later. I'm not sure what a "lite" version of Biab would accomplish. Someone doing a live gig wants the absolute best sound they can get. If you're not using RT's then we're going back to the "bad" old midi cheesy synth days using a lame GM midi synth unless the Ipad could handle large sample sets or use an external sound module like the Ketron but does the Ipad have a USB port that could be used with an external sound module?

Unless the ipad comes out with usb ports and other I/O functions I suspect it's not viable.

Blackberry on the other hand has announced a tablet that will run on QNX, which is a tweaked version of Unix for real-time apps, and will have I/O like hdmi/usb etc. This will happen someday.

I tried the ipad in a store and found it ok for webrowsing but after a few minutes the best I could see it doing is a nice slideshow. I can't see using it for development, maybe if you were brought up that that was the only keyboard it might fly with you, but I can type 30 times faster on a real keyboard.

Right and something I remembered from the previous thread is the Ipad doesn't use Apple's regular OS. It uses something specific to the Ipad so it's not like PG can simply adapt the Mac version of Biab. It's a completely different deal.
Btw John, I've been following your medical adventures and I'm glad you're back home but too bad about your hearing. At least it's better than the alternative. Sounds like you're getting some excellent care. I go to the West LA VA and man oh man there's some foxy young female doc's running around there too. A lot of girls been going to med school the last 10-15 years. Almost makes me want to check myself in...Good luck.

But why not have an iPad version of the BIAB iPhone app? I tried using the same one, but it was small and blurry if enlarged. We could use a version optomized for iPad use, one that we could see much better.

I am a biab user since the late 80's. 1986 to be exact.

I love biab.

BIAB MUST make an iPad version. I'm a windows guy but the iPad is (or will become)a must for gigging musicians.

I love my iPad. I take it out to every gig. I'm still a Windows guy when it comes to producing backing music (Semi Pro). But take my iPad to gigs.

There is something similar already for iPad. Look into the "Real b" App.
Very much like BIAB from the early versions (before you could add a melody to the song).

I am disappointed Peter. (You know who I am talking to here). Have you become too arrogant to see the future. You were WAY ahead of your time in the 80's and 90's.

Whats up with "were NOT making an iPad version because the CPU is too weak."

You mean the 286 CPU was powerful ????? (maybe in the 80's yes)

Come on brother. At least make a BIAB Player so we can port songs we made in our windows/mac version to the iPad when we go out to gig.

Maybe BIAB is now too big of an organization to do it.
There you have it. Gauntlet laid down.

A lover looking at another.

I don't mind having my BIAB program reside on my computer and being able to access my completed song files as in BIAB for iPhone.... My wish is to be able to see those files on my iPad in decent resolution. The older I get, the more important that is! An iPad version of the current iPhone version that would take advantage of the larger format with high-def instead of "2x" would be sooo nice! How about it Peter? That wouldn't be an overwhelming problem for the CPU and would be a viable solution....

Blessings!
Ken

Hi Rob,

The player has been available for a while now, it just requires Band-in-a-Box 2011 or 2011.5 for Windows to be installed on your PC.

Thanks
