I suddenly noticed that something wasn't right when I was listening to this chord progression I had inputted into BiaB 2017. Then I noticed the bass had disappeared. I double-checked with the mixer, toggling the solo button -- nope no sound. And of course the volume bar was up. Same as the other instruments. I loaded several different styles, no difference.

Out of desperation, I rebooted BiaB, hoping that might work. Nope. Then I rebooted the computer. Still nope.

I called up a couple of songs I have in a song list and the bass works fine with them. So it has to be something I did -- and with this specific piece of music.

Finally, after rebooting BiaB again, I just let the opening screen run with the style that it loaded on boot-up. So, it just took that C chord and ran with it. And guess what? No bass.

And it's just bass that's gone. Nothing else.

So here I am, racking my brains, wondering what I might have blundered into that shut down the bass. I'm still real new to 2017, and pretty rusty at BiaB in general. It's been more than a few years since the last time I spent any time with it.

I went through all the menu options, trying any that I thought might matter, but no luck.

Again, this isn't any sort of pre-formatted song or anything. It's just a bunch of chords I typed into the program. Nothing special, either. Minor sevenths and major sevenths, mostly.

I'll wager it's something simple I did, but I haven't a clue as to what it might be. So, got any ideas?

Rule out the obvious first: Check the mixer to be sure the bass track isn't muted? Volume up?

More subtle: Did you enter a bass track when you typed in the chord progression, and is that what's now missing? If so, then you need to either do it on the bass track AND immediately freeze the track, OR enter it on the Melody or Soloist track (those two are the only tracks not overwritten each time the song is regenerated) and probably mute the bass track.

Okay, this is just plain weird. So I stop the tune and get up from the computer and go do something else for a while. Come back and play the same song, and the bass is back. WT..?

So now I'm wondering when and why it's gonna disappear again.

Well, as I mentioned above, that was the firsts thing I checked.

No bass track. I just entered a bunch of chords. I've been cruising through all the styles and listening to what BiaB manages to pull out of its very deep hat to embellish my rather simple chord progression. I haven't felt the need to write a bass line yet.

Oh well, as I mentioned in my last post, the bass is back now. And I didn't change a thing.

I'll swear, computers and software have gotten so complex now, there really are ghosts in the machine.

Many years ago I was playing with this keyboard player that we called "Weird Danny". In the middle of a song, he just got up and walked off the stage and didn't come back. When we took our first break we found Danny in the back of the room, sitting at a table, drinking a beer. We asked the obvious question. Danny said he had to go to the bathroom so bad that he ran off the stage to avoid an accident. On the way back, "I noticed you guys sounded so damn good, I just had to sit here and dig on it". We fired him and got by without keyboards.

BTW, good to see you survived the surgery, John.

Do you have a button with your setup? I don't. I have to go to Options > Return to Factory Settings . . .

I usually don't like having to do that because I lose all my tweaks. But as a last desperate move, I might. Thanks for the tip. Hopefully the bass doesn't disappear again, and I won't have to worry about it.

Michael, there's no 'button'; it's just what you said. If you haven't done this in the last two years, you might not know it now asks if you want to save your settings first. Then reset everything else. Take a look. You can also save your settings anyway, a good idea if you've made many tweaks.

Years ago, I made a ton of custom settings. Now, almost none. Fonts, number of rows, and a custom toolbar are about all I need.

@folk, you've somewhat unexpectedly entered multiple responses to an 8 year old thread.
Are you having a conversation with yourself, or seeking assistance?
It might be better to start a new thread and provide detail of your own experience.
Also, do you run Windows or Mac BIAB software?
