https://soundcloud.com/esa-blomberg...&si=38607f46915748fc9aff26bfcb04e2e5The Skye Boat Song is a late 19th-century Scottish song adaptation of a Gaelic song composed c.1782 by William Ross, entitled Cuachag nan Craobh ("Cuckoo of the Tree"). The 19th century English lyrics evoked the journey of Prince Charles Edward Stuart ("Bonnie Prince Charlie") from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture by government soldiers after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. From there he made his way to France, never to return to Scotland. Sir Harold Boulton wrote the new lyrics to Ross's song, which had been heard by Anne Campbell MacLeod in the 1870s. She was on a trip to the isle of Skye and was being rowed over Loch Coruisk (Coire Uisg, the "Cauldron of Waters"), when the rowers broke into a Gaelic rowing song "Cuachag nan Craobh" ("The Cuckoo in the Grove"). It is often played as a slow lullaby or waltz, and entered into the modern folk canon in the twentieth century with versions by Paul Robeson, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, Roger Whittaker, Tori Amos, and many others. In my version I sing and play the guitars as well virtual Uillean pipes. As a regular at a local Irish pub where live music was played, I always enjoyed listening to this kind of music. And I'm a big fan of the Bodhran, an instrument that is unfortunately rarely used these days. Thanks. I'm also a great fan of Irish and other Celtic music. As I was a young man, we had a band playing also Celtic music. One of us built himself a bodhran, because it was hard to find in Finland in the late 1970s, when there were no internet shopping.
