The cafés are half-alive
I lingered over bitter coffee
Just to feel the time go by
There’s a girl with a clarinet
Playing “Silent Night” off-key
And I think of the way you’d tune your strings
Before you played for me

I crossed the Oberbaumbrücke
As the snow began to fall
The lights along the water
Felt like a slow winter waltz
I left a note at KaDeWe
Where the lights fall soft and blue
It just said “I almost stayed”
But I knew this too would pass

Now the trains run through midnight
Like an old and faithful friend
And I’m trying not to miss you
But it’s the season I guess
It feels like an afterthought
Like a letter never sent
So I pull up my collar
And let another season in
Christmas in Berlin
