Not trying to offend anyone but I just had to have a poke at the recent follies of Linsay Lohan. Will the drama ever stop.

Come join in. Can anyone add a verse?

If I Only had a Brain (the Linsay Lohan version)

Now I while away the hours, takin' long cold showers, to ease away the pain
This might not have arisen , and I wouldn't be in prison, if I only had a brain

Oh I should have used a chauffeur, or sent a well-paid gofer, after that cocaine
My heart was really sturin', when they asked me for some urine, if I only had a brain

Chorus-
Now I just sit and cry,
This cell has such a drab décor
I'm locked inside the same cell as before
I just can't wait to snort some more

If I'd understood my sentence, or even show repentance and not done it again
My life would be so merry, I would stick to Port and Sherry if I only had a brain

Ed, I understand this is humor, and they are actually very cleaver lines....

But, as a parent who suffers along with a child who has very similar drug dependancy issues and has felt first hand the consequences of this type of recouring involvement in the court systems, I can tell you there is nothing humorous here. My heart goes out to this gal and all who suffer from and with these serious issues. At the core is a mental health issue which we as a socity have never been able to address.

Sorry for bringing this thread down, but I wanted to add a perspective. Perhaps, I should add a "blues" versus to stay in a positive spirit. I'll see what I can come up with.

I thought it was brilliant.

There always will be someone, in most songs, who takes umbrage with lyrics.

I understand that from your perspective Dan, it brings bad things to the fore. But there are people who are not dependent and just make bad decisions we don't know.

I went through that in the hospital when chemo came close to killing me. Some songs just peed me off. Royally. Being told it was 50 50 I'd make a year didn't help.

I'm still kicking but resigned to fate.

On the other hand the words are well done, and I could see this showing up on a late night show with slides. We hold our 'public' figures to a higher standard, that's why the average joe who gets pulled over isn't news. Let it be a NBA star and it's front page. There is a difference to being stupid or calling for a ride. I went through the stupid period, then realized after years I was rolling loaded dice, and had the money to take cabs. I'm not saying she has a dependency, and Ed does not imply that. He's talking about bad decisions, or If I only had a brain.

Thanks for the chuckle Ed.

Ed,
I thought your lyrics were brilliantly thought out.

Dan, I am truly sorry to hear about your struggles to keep your beloved child safe and healthy.

---stop reading here if you don't like philosophical ramblings ----

On the topic of whether or not people should write songs that have potential to offend; it is inevitable that such songs will always be written. Somebody with a lot more wisdom than the average joe would have to determine whether or not writing them is desirable.

However, it is worth noting that all groups conform to the same basic set of governing principles, whether the group is a family, club, job, church, etc. All groups basically go through a forming, storming, norming and performing period, after which a set of rules is understood by everybody in the group. Some who don't agree with the rules leave the group. Some remain in the group but their disagreement goes underground. Others enforce the rules they agree with.

One way this enforcement manifests is through songs that extol the virtues of abiding by the will of the group, or by ridiculing any behavior that falls outside the group norm. All groups have this in one form or another, and Ed's song is a classic example of such peer enforcement. The function of such communication is to send a message to members who want to fit in. Peer pressure, as we call it, is perhaps the most effective method of maintaining group order, because it is pre-emptive (unlike punishment, which comes after the offense, and tends to be more hurtful)

In that sense, I think it can serve a useful purpose, because such communication is like a stop sign. If you see it and observe it, you are better off than if you ignorantly drive through a busy intersection. Yet, some who see the stop sign willingly ignore it. Most groups regard uninformed disobedience with more empathy than they regard informed and intentional disregard for group norms/laws. Whether we like it or not, that's the way groups work.

Gee Pat you need about 20 8 cylinder words and you'd sound exactly like my anthropologist son. He should get the Phd in the spring. Having read most of his papers and his Master's thesis you sound like a folk version of a him. That is you don't need the academic big words to get the same stuff out. Thanks for the insight Doc.

My apologies Jazz. I was thinking the point of the song was that L Lohan doesn't have a brian.Perhaps I'll scrap that version.

Ed, no offense was taken. As I said, I recognized the intent of humor and also the lryical skills. I don't want to stiffel your creative juices. Let it flow. Just offered a perpective from one who has been close to a similar situation. I know eveyone loves to watch a train wreck happen in slowmotion. Sometimes our real life stories creep into this forum. We have gotten glimpes into lifes trials and tribulations of other forum members on and off. It ain't all fun and music. Wish it were. But this is the "off-topic" section.

Or not, sadly not all things have a happy ending. But man! I do wish things work out for Dan and Family, i feel your pain.

It is heartbreaking when it touches us personally and saddening when we see those who we enjoy as entertainment fall into darkness. However it is life in that fast lane and very common.

When we see young talent like Ms Lohan rise up and shine as a beautiful youth, in fun family shows that warm the heart we develop a fondness for them. Then reality crashes in and we see how difficult it is for young people to handle fame and fortune in a world where morals, and character are not rewarded, or even taught.

Young people need guidance and kind loving discipline to learn, grow, and deal with lifes difficult lessons. In the hollywood, and similar environments we all to often see them at a very young age, almost turned loose with too much time and freedom on their hands. They are rich, and full of ego, adored and venerated at a time when they are to young to see the big picture. Not to mention the enfluences around them. Sex, Drugs Alcohol, The desire of youth combined with bad association that just wants to go along for the ride that fame and money can offer. Movie and music stars, atheletes, and the like it is the same, everyone wants a piece of them and the fall out of there celebrity.

You can go down thru the years and see the wreak and ruin fame and money has cause those not old enough and mature enough to handle it. Lindsey Lohan is just another example. Britney Spears, Tood Bridges, Ricky Nelson, Danny Bonaduce, the list goes on and on.

Me personally I don't like a train wreck, they are too hard to watch. As far as the song, i thought the lyrics were spot on, both funny and sad at the same time.
