Yes, the new GUI is much more modern (and better) than the old one, not only from an aesthetic standpoint (personally, this aspect doesn't matter to me at all), but specially, from a functional perspective: The interface elements are distributed in a much more logical and rational manner (everything is where most people expect it to be and works how most people expect it to work), and they can be arranged according to the user's preference. All of this results in a much more intuitive program and a much more satisfying user experience.
Of course, there is still room for improvement (lots of room, in fact), but this update is a great step in the right direction, so congratulations to PG Music and the person or people responsible for the new interface design.
