Call this an "age appropriate" torch song! ------------------------------------------ JoAnn of the Villages Jo-Ann, I saw you there at pickle ball; Lovely Jo-Ann, Hangin' with your ladies at the dinin' hall; You seemed so bright and cheerful and alive; So full of vim and vigor, even though it's after five; Oh, Jo-Ann, could we have dinner? You are a winner. Jo-Ann, I've watch when you're at Jazzercize; Lovely Jo-Ann, I hope that you're available, dating-wise; Jo-Ann! Jo-Ann, I heard that you're a Frasier fan. (me, too); Lovely Jo-Ann, We prob'ly have the same insurance plan (Blue Cross?); Well, I've had a hip replacement, so I can't shag; Karaoke, cards, or corn hole, lately that's my bag; Could we be birds of a feather? Let's get together! Maybe we can catch that hunger That we felt when we were younger; Whadda say? Jo-Ann! ========================= STYLE=_POPPNOB.STY. Hi Tom! If your aim was to give the listener a sense of unease - mission accomplished. By the second verse, my understanding of the subject moved from a person with an interest in another to someone developing a ‘fixation’.
Musically, the band was good, but I’d have preferred it to have more volume to give it oomph.
The line about the hip replacement and its effect on … is that a thing? It seems there are many body parts that conspire to dampen enthusiasm.
Despite my unease, I enjoyed the song and it gave me a chuckle.
Andrew

Tom,
Clever writing. Very. I laughed out loud. Several times. Real laughs. That is not an easy thing to accomplish.
Good BAND.
Really enjoyed that. Really.

Andrew, Floyd, Mario..thanks for listening.
Andrew...several key points since you're not from the US: --"The Villages" is a famous/infamous huge retirement 'city' for senior citizens in Florida, often cited for some of its inhabitants letting down their (I'm having a hard time finishing this sentence...fellow Americans, maybe you can help Andrew out here. Apologize if any of you are actually residents of The Villages!) --"shagging" is a term used in the American Southeast for a type of partner-dancing to beach music...it's very popular among the older set

Tom,
Love this. There is something very Lou Reed-ish about this piece. A bit of your phrasing, the tracks, pacing.
It's all Excellent!

Tom, this is hilarious and really well done. Great vocals and a perfect arrangement.
The conversation about "shagging" is even funnier, as I too assumed the British definition, which is, well, a different kind of dance indeed. But it still works with the lyric, just not as intended.
Beach music shagging was big when I lived in a Virginia beach town in the early 80s. Definitely a high energy activity not suited to the replaced hip...

Andrew, I only just realized that the reference to "shag" has a completely different, and different-colored connotation outside the US! But look up "shag dancing" on YouTube and you'll get a CORRECT idea of what I mean to point to!

… Andrew...several key points since you're not from the US: … --"shagging" is a term used in the American Southeast for a type of partner-dancing to beach music...it's very popular among the older set Thanks Tom! That clarifies it and provides a different perspective. Over here (and in UK, NZ) ‘shagging’ is what a young couple might do in the back seat of a car or elsewhere - or ‘on a rock’. In the 70s here in Australia, if someone had ‘spunk’ they might be a good looking person with bravado, as in ‘He’s a real spunk’, whereas in the UK (I think) it means a certain body fluid. Andrew

I'm with Bob Dean on this one. You sound very much like Lou Reed here, which is very cool. Clever lines throughout, as you often do. I'm from the US, but shagging means sex to me. I remember a 1989 movie called Shag, it was about the dance. Still, shagging means doing it. Never heard of the Villages. TIL.

Guess you have to have lived in NC/SC, maybe VA beach, Savannah to be clued into the “Shag Dance” scene…epicenter is Myrtle Beach. All based on 50s/60s beach band music.

I'm also hearing the Lou Reed vibe on this one, similar delivery.
Very clever write! I also didn't get many of the references, so thanks for explaining them.
Good performance, and a good band. Enjoyed!

Ha, cool lyrics. Age-appropriate with a tinge of the devilish youth showing through. The smile was constant, interrupted often with a guffaw here and there. Love this, Tom. You're quite the creative fellow. And it ends on the bass. Jo-Ann would like that.

A funny song, not only because of the lyrics, but also because of the way you deliver them. I really enjoyed my listen! Probably the first song I ever heard that uses the word "hip replacement" ![[Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]](https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/images/icons/default/thumbs_up.gif)
