I would like help to set up the Kronos 2 as a controller for SWAM FLUTES version 3. This based on hardware controllers NOT a question on using WIND controllers.
Want to set up the Kronos' joystick to replace a mod wheel and cover off vibrato speed and amount (depth)
What are the key effects I should assign to the Kronos by CC numbers?
What is an optimal setup for SWAM flutes with the Kronos as the Midi controller and playback device?
Is there any real flute player that knows the most important effects to have ready-to-go? For example overblow, portamento etc.
So far, I know I need vibrato control, I have expression with my expression pedal already set. I heard of setting portamento or legato with the Triton's ribbon.
Can the Kronos Joystick have 4 assignments or just 2--namely can I have 1 CC assignment for Y-axis up and one for Y-axis down and likewise for X-axis Right and X-axis Left. It seems right now I can only have 2 because my vibrato works for Y-axis upward but does not work for Y-axis downward.
What are the key Flute Effects and which are the Triton knobs or controllers that should be assigned to them?
Any help in this regard would be helpful. Do you know of any manual for a virtual flute that would explain what are the top priority flute sounds and effects that should be set up on my Kronos? The conrolling patch is in COMBI mode NOT PROGRAM mode.

Hi Peter,
I have the Swam Flutes. I don't have the Kronos 2 but I do have some suggestions. I don't know how much you know about setting up a keyboard for a Swam instrument so some of this may be redundant. All of these are in the MIDI mode 1- select the standard keyboard configuration and set it as the default setting by clicking on the three dots to the right. 2-click on vibrato, then learn, and move you joystick up and down. 3-click on expressivity, then on vibrato rate, and move your joystick left and right Does that work? See below. 4-If not then you have to assign each to a slider on your Kronos. That is one slider for vibrato and one for vibrato rate. 5-Assign the other parameters on the remaining sliders. Depending on the song I assign the other parameters to sliders. I usually have growl and flutter tongue assigned. Sometimes breath noise and overblow. I usually set the pitch bend to 0.3 both up and down for wind instruments and 12 or 24 for brass instruments. That is so I can get the fall offs and doits.
"Can the Kronos Joystick have 4 assignments or just 2--namely can I have 1 CC assignment for Y-axis up and one for Y-axis down and likewise for X-axis Right and X-axis Left. It seems right now I can only have 2 because my vibrato works for Y-axis upward but does not work for Y-axis downward."
You don't need 4 assignments. When you Y-axis is in the center then there is no vibrato. When you move it up you get vibrato. Moving the joystick down will get you nothing as there is already no vibrato. The same for the X-axis for rate. If you use sliders when the slider is down (or up on some systems) there is no vibrato or rate. Moving the slider will increase the vibrato and/or rate. Personally I would use sliders but that is only my preference and yours may be different.
I hope this helps. If you need more help feel free to contact me.

Thanks a lot Mario! I wonder my Kronos does not have a mod wheel but it has a joystick will the default setup be OK even if I don't have any mod wheel hardware? I really thank you for help in setting both vibrato settings. I only have one vibrato now. Do you understand Overblow? I am going to try most of what you said. Mario, do you understand the legato/glisando double options? Does one sound way better than the other? Also thanks for clarifying that I only have 2 joystick possiblities not 4.

Hi Peter, There are two different setups when it comes to mod wheel and pitch bend. From my experience the two wheel setup, one for modulation and the other for pitch bend, is the most common. However Korg and some others use a joystick when north and south is the modulation and east and west is the pitch bend. When using a joy stick it has to be centered as the pitch bend can go up and down, that is from -8k to +8k, while the modulation does not have to be centered and goes from o to 127 (or 1 to 128 depending on what scale your system uses. Pitch bend can be set from -2 octaves to +2 octaves down to -0.1 semitone to +0.1 semitone depending on your software. So yes you can use your joystick as a mod wheel just that the center point of the joystick is 0 and all the way up is 127, Going south on your joystick will do nothing and there is no negative setting on a mod wheel. I only use the one vibrato setting however if you want to use both the speed and depth you have to set a slider up for each one. Here is an explanation of overblowing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OverblowingI only use it on rare occasions. Legato means only playing one note at a time; note that the flute can be set to polyphonic also, I think two notes at a time but I'm not on my music computer so I'm not sure how many notes it can play. If you overlap one note to another and/or use velocity (depending on what SWAM instrument you have) you will get a slur. A glissando is a glide between two notes. This is more effective on notes that are a third or more from each other. I use legato as my main setting sparingly adding overblow, vibrato, growl, etc to add realism. I never use any of the other nuances for the entire song as that is not a realistic thing to do. I hope this helps and good luck.
