You need this:

https://www.petersontuners.com/products/stroboClipHD/?srsltid=AfmBOoolS_r5kc5N1MJifDv-n657AIPyeSK9lF8QJqkJ5pEbvWCz23CG

From the website:
Quote
The Peterson StroboClip HD™ (SC-HD) has the same tenth-of-a-cent accuracy as all Peterson Strobe Tuners.

This versatile tuner comes complete with a bright high-definition screen, over 50 Sweetened™ tunings, alternate temperaments for a vast array of string and wind instruments...

and soft rubber-lined jaws to protect your instrument's finish while offering a firm grip for maximum signal tracking.

I've had this headstock tuner for a while now, but hadn't used it much.
Used it a bit on my acoustic guitars, but I seldom pick those up anymore (having too much fun with other instruments)

I most often play electric through software amps on my computer or through the Spark app - which all include convenient tuners.
And as Kris Kristofferson used to say, they are "...close enough for Country"
So I kinda neglected (forgot about) the Peterson.

A couple of months ago, I decided to actually learn how to play my mandolin. It's been just hanging on the wall for 30 years.
Trying to tune a mandolin with a "bouncing needle tuner" is Hell.

So I dug out the Peterson.
Heaven.

Cannot recommend it highly enough. Especially for mandolin.
It's great for my bass, too (hard to trust those needles for that, too)

Great having the "sweetened" selections.
(Check all 50 near the bottom of the website page)

$60 at Sweetwater

Or Amazon...

Get yourself a Christmas gift you'll actually use...
smile

A side note about tuning mandolin...

Andy Woods (one of our RealTracks mandolin guys) recommends not using a mechanical tuner for the second string in a pair.
He says use it for the first one and tune the second to match the first by ear.
So I figured I'd pass that along.
It's a good way to check your ear, too. Once you settle on an "ear tune" for that second, see if the strobe agrees...

Sure I must have a dozen tuners lying around here. But I don't have THAT one, and I DO love Peterson strobe tuners. Sold my Strobostomp and miss it. But prefer headstock tuners anyway, SO...

Here I go again.

You're KILLING me, Floyd...

Yeah, ya had me interested until I saw it costs $60! That's a HUGE PASS for me! For that price it better tune my mando and hand it to me on stage! laugh

So John, the exercise here is to RATIONALIZE something that you WANT but don't actually desperately NEED. It goes something like this: I sold my Strobostomp for $70, so I figure I'll MAKE $10 by buying this one, right?

Of course, I've spent that $70 more than a couple of times already. But details aren't really important here...

And sure, I do still have my first pitch pipe from over 50 years ago, so I never really needed anything else in all the intervening years. But what's the fun in THAT?

I understand the hesitation.
Not for everyone.

I actually paid the original price of $80.
For me...worth every penny. And I'm a cheap [*****].
If only for the mandolin. But also the Bass.
Being able to tune while music is playing in the background is a big plus, too (I think)

And the fact that the settings are "sweetened".
Are you familiar with James Taylor tuning video? ...where he explains your B string needs to be flat... that is what these do...

I've spent much more on several pieces of music software that I've never actually used. (How 'bout you?)
I use this every day. On several instruments. It will be my go-to for the rest of my life, I imagine...

So, like I said...for me...worth every penny.

For a less pricey Peterson strobe tuner with sweetener options, there is an iPhone iStrobe app (10 USD) with the guitar and bass sweetener pack (6 USD). I don't play mandolin like Floyd, but I find the sweetener setting useful for acoustic guitar. There's a setting for using a capo, too. Very cool stuff.

THANKS, Floyd! JT always had the best acoustic guitar tone, and always played as in-tune as his pitch perfect vocals. First fingerstyle tune I learned note-for-note was "Fire and Rain". It just never gets old...

Yeah, I remember that James Taylor video. I should play guitar more often, my calluses are almost gone.

Last month, I'd foolishly taken my short-scale bass to a gig without checking the tuning on it, and it was untunable.

Back home a week later, I didn't have a tuner handy to intonate it, and the Fender app on my phone was useless.

So I downloaded the free version of the LockOn tuner. Wow!

If you don't mind tuning your instrument on a PC, you might consider getting it.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I'm gonna check it out.
I have several already and bought a Snark Air last year on Black Friday for half price, but I'm intrigued with the Peterson strobe.
As Floyd mentioned, I vote for clip on over phone app.
There's nothing more frustrating than having a musician ask everybody in the band to be quiet so he/she can use their phone to tune with!

Thanks Floyd!

Darn you anyway Floyd Jane!!! Desire arises, brain goes into obsession mode. The only way to stop it is to buy the dang thing. A pox upon ye!

Actually I have been looking at this a for a long time. My current Intellitouch PT10 clip-on sometimes leaves my acoustics sounding perhaps a little sour and it has some trouble locking into the low E string of my electric bass.

Sigh...................................................

My new Stroboclip HD showed up today. Super solid feeling, much more so than my many Snarks. VERY fast, stupid easy to use and includes a robust roster of built-in sweeteners.

The only downside for me is the lack of rechargeability. If you want that, get the Stropoclip HDC, about 12 USD more on Amazon. I'll spend $12 a year on C2032 batteries easy...

Recommended.

Thanks for that psychological boost! LOL (seriously)

I actually don't like rechargeables so purposely chose the battery version. I keep stuff forever and don't want the rechargeable battery to die. But then again at my age, this concern may be entirely laughable..... shocked

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
