I suspect that we'll see this MIDI-like editing showing up in MuseScore as well. Two portions of the code that got rewritten recently were the audio and data structures.

Rewriting the data structures allowed a more flexible approach to notation, as the prior approach was locked into certain assumptions and constraints. This prevented certain editing actions from being implemented, as well as preventing the use of a MIDI-like mode.

But I've heard a ton of great things about Dorico, so I may play with the SE version.
