Hi everyone, In the last weeks of this year I managed to make this song. It is called You knew it already https://on.soundcloud.com/c4Ok35CQKbK1POiVXsAlthough one has to create nice songs about Christmas or things connected to that, I made a song that doesn't fit in those expectations. But... I made it, because I'm happy. I finished the rebuild of my recording studio, long after the expected time I thought I would need. And as a kind of souncheck I made this song. And I liked it much. Made some sad lyrics and bothered Marty Straub (thanks Marty!) with it... And now you!?! The lyrics are on SoundCloud, so I won't include them here, but you knew that already. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very happy 2026. Let's hope it comes true. I don't know if it's suggestibility on my part, but this production does sound a step up for you. What is in your new studio to give you such good results? Good song and good singing as usual, but better sounding. Or is it in my head?

I'd say your new studio passed the test and was worth the effort - the production/mix is really good The good thing about ended relationships is that they often make good material for a song, and you've turned it into a really good song. Enjoyed my listen(s). A lot!

Hi Hans! You’ve chosen a really tasty RT here, and coupled with your chords and melody, has brought about a good song. I was looking forward to the chorus each time around. Studio sounds good! Merry Christmas! Andrew D

Super song, Hans! Lots of unexpected twists with your chord changes and melody, but it all flows naturally and sounds SO cool. Some nice lyrical twists on the breakup theme: Happy song are overrated anyway.
You've really dug deep for some BiaB sounds we don't hear featured like this. That opening acoustic guitar is very punchy. Your use of the vocal Mmms is unique but the best I've ever heard (or imagined). The lead guitar fills are nice, too.
The whole production has an open, glassy shimmer that supports the song perfectly. Congratulations on your new studio. Well done!
Merry Christmas!

Hi Bob, Rob, Brain, Andrew and Paul, It's great to read these lovely messages from you. Also because the studio renovations caused acoustic problems I never expected. So the improvements were turning out to be good. Your comments prove that. Thanks! Hans, Great song. Love the instrumentation on this one. Excellent vocal as always. The production has a lot air and punch - very nice! Loved it! Bob Hi Bob, I never take "excellent singing" for granted. Especially not as you get older, but thankfully, judging by what you said, that's still the case. Thanks for that! I don't know if it's suggestibility on my part, but this production does sound a step up for you. What is in your new studio to give you such good results? Good song and good singing as usual, but better sounding. Or is it in my head? Hi Rob, it must be in your head... No, I don't really know what helps the most in the rebuild. Or maybe it is because my recording gear function better here? I also use another reverb (Valhalla). But thanks a lot for this wonderful comment! I'd say your new studio passed the test and was worth the effort - the production/mix is really good The good thing about ended relationships is that they often make good material for a song, and you've turned it into a really good song. Enjoyed my listen(s). A lot! Hi Brain, you almost said the same as the others; the improved studio turns out to be good. Thanks for that! I wish I had done it sooner, reading all the comments... And about ended relations; Don't suffering and creation go hand in hand? Hi Hans! You’ve chosen a really tasty RT here, and coupled with your chords and melody, has brought about a good song. I was looking forward to the chorus each time around. Studio sounds good! Merry Christmas! Andrew D Hi Andrew, It took me some time to come to this. At first I had something with a piano, cello and violin, and Marty was too polite to say it was nothing. He only said he was sure I will change the concept many times and come up with something wonderful, or something like that. I don't think he heard this version yet... But thank you for saying it so nice. and you know, when I hear the song myself, now I'm looking forward to the chorus too. That was what you achieved here! I like this Hans. Great groove and very nice tracks. Harrison? Good job. Hi Paul, Janice and Bud used to call me John for years. And now I am Harrison? Only Ringo and Paul (!) to come... Thanks a lot, man! I wish you all a very nice Christmas and what comes after that; 2026! Hans

I echo all the kudo's already expressed--such a quality track and well-made composition. I esp liked the break that leads into the chorus, also the very cool vocal harmonies spread out nicely to L-R. And it's a really engaging rhythm that the whole thing has. Great post!!

A new song by Hans is always the highlight of the week, and in this case, the highlight of the season Glad to hear you have set up your studio and it producing more of your classics. Sad song to my taste - "Spring fills the air, but my mind conceals it/Too clouded to care" I like that familiar image. Nice acoustic rhythm and lovely chorus where your voice and harmonies really shine, I really enjoy how your vocals sit in the mix - and the mix itself has air and punch (edit: how on Earth I came with the exact same words as Bob, maybe because they are so true). Happy Holidays! Janne

A really nice arrangement and a good choice of BIAB style Hans. Particularly like the opening, coming in lightly with the guitars and then punching in with the bass and drums.
Good job, Have a merry Christmas.

Hi, Hans. So happy to be the one you "bother" with your progress. I was getting a bit worried about the progress of your studio rebuild, but the progress on this song was never anything to worry about. It started out with a good idea, and your vocals can make any song better. THis is the best mix. Thanks for bothering me, and keep it up, Hans.

Hi, Hans. Congratulations on getting the studio done. I love the attitude that comes through on your vocals. You've got a very distinct musical style. The lyrics are on SoundCloud, so I won't include them here, but you knew that already. Ha! I see what you did there. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in 2026!

This song had me form the opening guitar. It's a really nice mix, though I would have like the guitar solo to have gone on a bit longer.

Hi Hans
I'm sorry to be late on this as I"m still catching up.
First off – big high‑five on finishing the studio rebuild.
Wow. Just… wow. From the very first note of that smoky, fingerpicked guitar intro, you had me hooked — it was like musical Velcro for the soul. And your vocals! You’ve got that rare gift of sounding both raw and polished at the same time — like emotional sandpaper wrapped in velvet. And those harmonies? Top-Tier my friend. The backing “mmms” from Marty (bless his soul for being “bothered”) added just the right touch of gospel-tinged guilt. This track is a masterclass in mood. You chose RealTracks like a sommelier pairing wine with sorrow — every instrument pours into the next with such care and feel. That laid-back bluesy electric solo? Pure liquid regret. The pumping bass? My foot hasn’t stopped tapping since my first listen. Honestly, if this is just a soundcheck for your new studio, I can’t wait to hear what happens when you actually start recording — world, brace yourselves. Massive kudos on finally completing your studio rebuild — I know it took longer than expected, but clearly, great art (and great cable management) can’t be rushed. This song isn’t just a comeback — it’s a statement. A heartbroken, beautifully arranged, expertly produced statement that says, “I’m back, my gear is working, and yes, I will make you cry with minor chords.” Here’s to 2026 — may it bring you better love, better luck, better Wi-Fi… and at least one person who doesn’t already know how it ends. Bravo, Hans. This one’s a keeper. Keep strumming, keep humming, and keep making us all wonder why we didn’t know it already! Warmest (and slightly jealous) wishes, Izzy

Excellent lines to describe the love lost feel.
Hans, for us you’re again definitely channeling John Lennon here, which is delightful.
The arrangement, your vocals and the RT’s you chose work excellently in creating powerful dynamics. That Brent solo is great.
Your upgraded studio is working out great indeed.
Well done and we much enjoyed it. Happy New Year!

Hans,
I love every part of this! You've got a unique voice that always drives your songs! I'm a fan! I really like the laid-back rhythm section on this, especially the drum track! The chorus on this is great!
Take care, TB

Hi Ron, Ghostgum, Dave, Laurent, Tano and Janne, First of all, I want to apologize for my late reply to your messages. It's been a hectic few days. Not just for me, but probably for you too. There were a lot of people here, and there were a few birthdays (like my wife's), but I'm a little ashamed that I couldn't find the time to reply to your kind words! Hi Ron, you always analyze my songs or the instruments I use. I like that! Those vocals weren't actually meant for the song, but somewhere in the middle of the night I woke up and thought, "I need backup vocals in the style of 'mmm'" for my song. So I searched through the entire BiaB library and finally found these gospel mmms (in swing). Those were the only ones that fit the song, even though Ray wrote they didn't. Only in the second verse (I actually liked them best in the first verse...). Anyway, they sounded good. And I was very happy that my studio worked a bit better than my previous one, but don't be fooled, the recording space is still very small... The mixing room is much bigger! Groovy song with an infectious beat. As others have noted, your new studio is paying dividends already. Merry Christmas to you! Hi Ghostgum, thanks for your compliments. I hope the new studio will do the same for all my future songs ;-) Your best yet I think, Hans! Production is top notch as others have mentioned. Excellent vocal! Best to you and yours for Christmas. Hey Dave, thanks a lot for your compliments! I'd never say a song is my (or your) best yet. I have mixed feelings about that statement. I still love many of my earlier songs. I know you didn't mean it that way, but I just wanted to say this. The recording/mixing/mastering makes the song sound clearer than my previous songs. I can hear that too. I hope I can maintain that level of sound engineering in the future. So thanks for the vote of confidence! The new studio seems to be doing good things, but it has a good musician to run it. Laurent Hallo Laurent, you're right! Whatever studio you have, you still need a musician. Thanks for mentioning that!!! I echo all the kudo's already expressed--such a quality track and well-made composition. I esp liked the break that leads into the chorus, also the very cool vocal harmonies spread out nicely to L-R. And it's a really engaging rhythm that the whole thing has. Great post!! Hi Tano, because of words like yours, the bar is high now for me! I hope I can reach it again (and again!) Thanks! A new song by Hans is always the highlight of the week, and in this case, the highlight of the season Glad to hear you have set up your studio and it producing more of your classics. Sad song to my taste - "Spring fills the air, but my mind conceals it/Too clouded to care" I like that familiar image. Happy Holidays! Janne Hi Janne, I wish you mean that (highlight of the week). You must have missed me... And what a nice feeling you can talk like Bob! One day we make a song together. Think about it... and thanks a lot for all those nice words! Well, I can't wish you a Merry Christmas, but I can wish you a very happy and musical 2026! Hans

Hi Knee Wobler, Marty, Mario, David C, Chay, Izzy, Janice and Bud, These have been very busy days for me, and I think for you too! But I'm not as organized as I should be: answering your messages as quickly as possible! You were all so kind to comment on my song, and what did you get in return? A complete silence!!! And while I can make excuses, I should have answered you much sooner. I'm so sorry! Maybe you won't comment on my songs anymore... but please, don't. A really nice arrangement and a good choice of BIAB style Hans. Particularly like the opening, coming in lightly with the guitars and then punching in with the bass and drums. Good job, Have a merry Christmas. Hi Knee W; What you wrote is actually the kind of structure I like to try to use in more of my songs. It's a kind of thinking about saving the goodies for later. Thanks for that! And a creative year too! Hey Marty, yeah, I love pestering you with my ideas! You stay so positive about it, even when my version is... well, call it "just a rough idea." Then you reply, "I think this or that sounds good, AND I'm convinced you can do more with it in a new version." Like with this song. And look what happens? (Another) song you like! Thanks, Marty! Hans, that new studio jump started your creativity. Great song and lyrics Outstanding vocal and backing tracks Super mix IMHO this is your best to date. Hi Mario, thanks for your kind words! But I do have mixed feelings about your last sentence. I get what you mean, but is this my best song yet? Don't let my feelings get to you. This is how you feel about this song, and that's great. Thanks again! Hi David, I think you're the first to notice that line. I like to write things with a touch of humor. I'm hoping my new studio will lead to more nice songs, but don't count on it! It's the kind of song that helps, I think. And thank you so much for your kind compliment about my singing and style! This song had me form the opening guitar. It's a really nice mix, though I would have like the guitar solo to have gone on a bit longer. Hello Chay, I agree with you on that opening. It turned out better then I expected it to be. And yes, if time isn't an issue in these kind of songs, I agree with you on that solo. Thanks for this post! Hi Hans I'm sorry to be late on this as I"m still catching up. First off – big high‑five on finishing the studio rebuild.

Warmest (and slightly jealous) wishes, Izzy Hi Izzy, you really know how to write words that sound (or read) like pure honey and gold. Awesome! I got a huge smile on my face when I read it: "Wow!" Is this what they mean by "walking in the sunshine"? Because that's exactly what I did after reading your post. You did make one small mistake though: Marty didn't sing those "mmms." I think he would have liked to, but no, those were actually from the BiaB gospel singers. I thought the song was ready to be released, and then—in the middle of the night—I thought: "No, I still want some extra vocals, just without the words." And so it happened. And my wife wasn't even jealous... “Sun shines bright today, yet I can’t feel it.

Well done and we much enjoyed it. Happy New Year! J&B Hi J&B, and yes, John is back again! I didn't realize he was gone ( the real one, ye, but even the 'fake' one?). I hope my studio did the magic, but it could also be this kind of song. Thanks a lot for your compliments! So, now we are about 15 days in 2026. A lot of things (keep) going on, but so does our music, I hope. Thank you all and till our next songs! Hans

Hi Arri, Scott (Storm), Ray, Torrey and Scott, Last but certainly not least... Thank you for your kind words! I won't write any further excuses for my delayed response. But you have every right to be upset about it. If that helps...? I don't know. Nice groovy chord progression. Well produced. Thanks Arri! I didn't hear the word 'Groovy' for a long time, while I used to use it often years ago ;-) Excellent mix and production. I can feel the sadness and the anger of the persona in the song. Good vocal (as usual). Hi Scott, thanks for this! Yes, you're right, anger, disillusionment, and sadness. But that only applies to me with this song. I had to empathize. Normally, I'm much happier... Good one Hans. I wasn't all that keen on the oohs of V1 but they fitted better in V2. I knew it, Ray! You know, when I try something out in a song, I always think, "What will Ray think of that?" So you see how important you are to me. But usually, I still go my own way ;-) About those "oohs": there were no suitable samples, so I had to improvise. And I liked the result. Ron did too... But thanks! Hans, I love every part of this! You've got a unique voice that always drives your songs! I'm a fan! I really like the laid-back rhythm section on this, especially the drum track! The chorus on this is great! Take care, TB Hi Torrey, how lovely to read your comment! It definitely put a smile on my face for a day or so. Excellent song Hans. Excellent vocal and lyric. Boy big difference in your productions. Everything is so well separated and open. Really cool production. Well done Hello Scott, what I said to Torrey, up here, counts for your words too. Thanks a lot! All your compliments have raised the bar for me. I hope I can continue to deliver this quality in my future songs, even if they're a bit busier, or whatever. Thanks for the encouragement! Hans
