The word for gold certainly dates back to proto-Indo-European as something like *ghel, so has it's origins at least around 2500BC. It then meant something like "to shine". Perhaps surprisingly aurum probably also derives from PIE, from a slightly different root (H2ews) that meant something like "to become light" or dawn.

It's quite intriguing how language changes over time.
