I guess it's at least in part the UK's and Germany's shared past that made for some of the common ground in the Christmas Truce. The irony of so many of the wartime songs, in both World Wars, being common to both the British and the Germans has alwasy struck me. The Kaiser, of course, was a grandson of Queen Victoria.

I find some of the songs extremely moving, including John McCutcheon's above and Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me To The End Of Love".

It's a time to ponder the various struggles around the world that are going on right now.
Putin will likely turn the heat up for Christmas eve and Christmas day in Ukraine.
