This is about five years old. All I changed was my vocal, which is now done by SUNO. It's so much better now, the way I always wanted it to sound. I tried very hard to improve the harp break, but Jelly Roll Johnson is much better at the folky thing than I am.

Lyrics: (BTW, a "Christmas tree" in drag racing is the column of lights used to start a race)

Pop, he was hard on me, it didn't do no good
But he got me fixing cars, make em run like they should
I took all my frustration down to the local strip,
I'd wait to see that Christmas tree and then I'd let her rip

There's a feeling at the finish line when you know you won,
You won't get nowhere else, and when the day is done
You can bet the beer is good, and that trophy's sweet,
At Route 3 Drag-o-way, stock amateur meet

The smell of burning rubber strong in the air
Girls screaming for their guys, wind through their hair
When that DJ calls your name, everything feels right
Nothing like a winner in the roar of the night

Ain't no money in it, I'm racing for the kicks,
Work a couple jobs, I'm never home at six
Late nights you can find me, underneath that hood
Better Rs, a bit more torque and then I'll be real good

I ain't perfect no ways, temper there for sure,
But when I'm at the starting line, that's the perfect cure,
People in three counties, they follow me each week
That boy in the two tone Chevy, sure runs a blue streak

There's a feeling at the finish line when you know you won,
You won't get nowhere else, and when the day is done
You can bet the beer is good, and that trophy's sweet,
At Route 3 Drag-o-way, stock amateur meet

It's an intimate song that's very well done. At one point, I would have liked a change of pace, like a chorus, but that's just what I felt like doing when I heard it, and it might not fit at all with what you intended by wanting to maintain this atmosphere.
Anyway: great work!

Nice folky sounding tune.

This brings back some memories....

On the radio back in Jersey.... Sunday Sunday Sunday at the Delaware county drag-a-way.... fuel burning roadsters, rails and rods.....

and.... a buddy of mine who bought an old Chevy nova from an old lady who had it in the backyard using it as a chicken coop. He had the body work done and painted it white.... dropped in an engine he was rebuilding, with a 4 barrel carb and took me for a test ride. It was like a rocket launch but he complained that it didn't "get off the line" quick enough. New rear end gearing and a few trips to the Coastal Plains Drag strip showed it wasn't even competitive. It needed to drop an entire second to even stand a chance of being in the top. He explained that to lose that second, would likely cost more than he had already spent, which was substantial, so he put it up for sale.

Rob,

A very Solid write...start to finish. Good lines all over the place.

That finger-pick acoustic is just the thing (a pretty amazing RT - good flow).
A just-right production. Well done.

Good listening.

Rob, cool tune. Always neat when you get to hear with your ears what you always heard in your head. LOVE your harp lines, and the simple instrumentation works fine for the feel of the song I think you were going for. That Suno vocalist has a lot of personality and suits the song perfectly. Super job!

This sounds so good. I love the sparse instrumentation that fits the song like a cliched glove. The suno voice is good too.

You are such a good writer, Bob. Love these lyrics as much as I enjoy your short stories. I also love your playing, but I get what you mean JRJ. There are a few songs I use other bassists, too. Yeah, your SUNO singer is far better than either of us could do. But what would our world be like if Dylan used Suno? Good song, my friend.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Bob, an excellent song. Utilizing an AI vocalist in a BiaB song was brilliant. Super blend. I really liked your blues harp, it fit the finger picked acoustic guitar perfectly. As an ol' gear head I can relate!
Loved it

Hey Bob,

Excellent write! And I really like the song arrangement too, the stripped back approach is perfect.

And yes, the vocal is pretty much perfect.

Good one, enjoyed.

The drag race scene imagery is great - we could hear the engines and crowd and smell the rubber and gas.
Bud used to visit the local drag skip when in high school.

Love the RT’s and that harmonica is perfect.
The SUNO vocal does fit the vibe very well.

This could also describe a mountain bike racer’s feelings and race prep.
Something we both did for many years. smile

Loved it!

Thanks, Ron! Yes, I am really happy with this. I felt like the singer sounded like just the right age for the story.

Your Dylan question reminded me of a bluegrass LP I had in the early seventies. It might have been the Osbornes, or Flatt and Scruggs. They did a Dylan song, but it was preceded by some in-studio banter. They talked about how great Dylan's songs were, but that he really couldn't sing. They were pretty harsh about it. I love Dylan's singing, but many people do not, and would be happy to hear him use SUNO. I'd like to think if Dylan started his career today, he would still use his own voice. But who knows? Do you know David Forman? A great songwriter with an unusual voice who only did one album (mid seventies). You have to check out his song, Dream of a Child on yt. Fantastic lyrics. Burton Cummings covered it - don't listen to that version, it's terrible.
