As many people here are using AI, I wanted to provide a bit of what I have learned the hard way. I am no expert! I have spent over a thousand hours studying and interacting with many AIs/LLMs. I use public AI, ChatGPT, Grok, Claude, and several others. I have many LLMs that I run locally on my computers; some are very specialized, some are straight out of the box.

For music, AI can be useful for a very large number of things, everything from ideas about BIAB to better ways of recording and mixing music. But.....

What AI Really Is

AI is not intelligent.
AI is a sophisticated pattern predictor.
It does not think.
It does not understand.
It does not know what is true.
Mathematics is the only thing AI can actually calculate exactly

What it actually does

AI does not just guess the next word.
It predicts:
how a sentence will continue
how an idea is likely to develop
how an explanation usually unfolds
how code is normally written
how people typically answer similar questions
In other words:
AI guesses how a thought, explanation, or line of reasoning is likely to continue.

Why it can seem so smart

Because it has seen:
millions of examples
books, articles, code, explanations, conversations
So it has learned the patterns of how people think and write.
That can look like intelligence.
But it is still pattern prediction.

The important warning

AI can be wrong and sound confident at the same time.
It can:
make things up
blend facts together incorrectly
give answers that sound right but are not
Not because it is lying…
but because it is guessing.

The one sentence to remember

AI does not know the truth.
It predicts what usually comes next.

I can answer many questions about AI as it relates to music, if anyone has an interest. here or PM.

Cheers,

Billy

“Amazing! I’ll be working with Jaco Pastorius, Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, and Buddy Rich, and you’re telling me it’s not that great of a gig?
“Well…” Saint Peter, hesitated, “God’s got this girlfriend who thinks she can sing…”
