And for sure, also the other notes should somehow match those preferences then - e.g. if a player chooses to tendentially avoid open strings and that means that a specific d-note is on the 5th fret of the a-string and not on the open d-string, then the preceding and the following notes should also be placed around the 5th fret, as long as possible.

Just below the tabs E string is a list of number going from the left to the right. This list represents the fret position. Thus clicking on the 5 your notes will be around the 5th position, i.e. no open strings. This works for me. Does it help you?
